La Swordfish est une brune hybride aux céréales d’une bière anglaise et à la levure belge, ce qui lui donne un goût à la fois malté et léger. Les goûts de caramel et de chocolat sont prédominants, alors qu’une touche d’épices reste en bouche.

500ml bottle. Dark mahogany with a slight mocha head. Roasted but slightly stale malt, smoke, nuts, some oxidization. Well carbonation, malty, bit thin, starts sweet and continues that way, finish is somewhat dry, bit grainy. Interesting.

500 ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. 20JL11.

App.: Very deep mahogany with a decent fluffy off-white froth. Aroma: Nutty, fruity malts, slightly minty and cola-like, somewhat earthy, dark dried fruits, brown sugar, fairly nice with a few iffy notes. Palate: Medium+ body, limited effervescence. Flav.: Darker than the nose, more like a stout, dark chocolate, black coffee notes, then the more Belgian fruity malts, touches of earthiness and nuttiness, some cola-like herbals, a bit...eclectic; almost dry with fair (inappropriate?) bitterness and a fairly long malty, minty, coffee and slightly boozy finish.

Not bad. Confusing. Or confused.

500 mL bottle. Dark brown with a film of beige head. Smells like cola and coffee. Only milder. The flavour is mild as well. Mostly caramel and chocolate malt. Nice hopping. Kinda hard to describe. But enjoyable. Nothing wrong with it.

Intense aroma of figs, hops and caramel. Great taste of molass added with chocolate hints. High presence of hops but not too arch or aggressive with spices notes at end. Enjoyable.

Bottle, purchased fresh from the brewery after their tap had run dry. Pours a beautiful deep garnet-brown with a bubbly tan head that shows respectable retention. Aroma is dark caramel and heaps of raisins and dates, with some spicy nuances. Sweet fruity profile, again raisins, some plum, nice dark caramel with chocolate and rummy undertones. Medium bodied, silky mouthfeel. Very nicely done!

From 500ml bottle. Pours a deep ruby-tinged brown with a frothy beige head, receding to yield spotty lacing. Plenty of yeast/bread character in the nose along with caramels, dark fruits, and a light grassy hop note. A little spiciness quickly develops and then fades into a bready, earthy, and grainy malt profile. Finishes on the dry side with a touch of sweetness remaining. Nice and light on the palate, smooth carbonation makes this quite drinkable, even for warmer occasions. Not bad at all.

Rastacouere (6159) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 23, 2011
500 ml bottle from Au Coin Duluth. A small beige head tops the cola coloured pour. Abundant yeastiness, bready and fruity meets biscuity, toasty malts in a fairly hoppy context where spicy, herbal hops serve more than a support function. The roasted malts blend in nicely with the Belgian yeastiness whose phenols are just restrained enough and tartness remains limited. For such a recipe, I’m actually pleasantly surprised by the balance, the roast serving as a counterpart for the milk chocolate sweetness, making for a caramelly latte malt profile that quickly turns toward more serious chocolate and nuts. Finishing earthier and with a powderiness that grows on the palate and feels at its place. Original and pleasant.

(500 ml) Le liquide a une robe brune acajou. Un anneau de mousse flotte sur la concoction. Le nez présente des arômes de chocolat et de caramel avec des épices marquées et des effluves de noix. Les saveurs abondent dans le même sens : le profil chocolaté est évident tandis que les noix et les épices s’accrochent aux papilles. En bouche, le liquide a un corps plutôt léger avec un pétillement plus ou moins fort et une texture mince. La finale permet aux timides houblons d’accompagner l’amertume des grains rôtis.

On tap at the brewpub, sample size. I was not going to Le Naufrageur expecting to have some great belgian style beers, but this reddish ale had a great complexity and was really a easy to drink one. Roasted malts and caramel, with a typically belgian yeast. A great hybrid beer!

Sample at Vice et Versa in Montreal. Pours a reddish dark brown with thin tan head. Aroma has treacle, caramel. Taste is malty and layered, very pleasing, not too boozy. Very enjoyable.
