3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Lubiere (7002) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 26, 2011
A lightly hazed golden ale with a thick off white head. In aroma, sweet honey and spruce tips, lightly oily, nice. In mouth, an oily sweet biscuitty malt with nice sprice finale and berries, a tad short but good. On tap at Mondial 2011, June 12 2011.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JulienHuxley (1154) - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 18, 2011
Pint on cask @ the brewpub. Pale, hazy yellow pour with white white foam. Aroma is nice and sprucey, actually not far off an american IPA, kind of fruity as well. Taste is light and fruity (maybe I’m tasting the Quebec malts), tame but interesting coniferous flavours add some bitterness but the whole comes out as quite sweet. Palate was smoothly carbonated and had a moderate to long finish. I just saw this was 9% Are you kidding me? This tastes all of 4... Anyhow, it is a nice refreshing beer and a tasty experiment.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 13, 2011
My Bottom Line:
Subdued pine needles meet shy 2-row malts in this bubbly and easygoing session ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the hazy pale blond.
-I think this is the proper intensity for the annedda addition, but I just thought the base brew was forgettable.
-The prickly carbonation took too much room in the flavor profile for my tastes.
-The base malts weren’t that harmonious with the conifer flavors.
-This was very drinkable, which is part of the point, but it’s personality was not salient enough to become part of Trou du Diable remarkable lineup, imho.
-Not sure if hops were used in this (didn’t taste like it, for sure), but I would get some coniferous varieties to help spruce up (rimshot) the flavor profile and finish.
On tap at the Mondial.
