I’ve tried this twice. Once at the pub where it could easily claim a spot in the province’s top 100 beers and another time at Brouhaha where I found it more restrained, less fruity and rich. At the pub though, this was a very dark brown pour covered by a lasting off-white head. Elegant malt aroma comprising well-roasted graininess, toasty nuances and coffee touches, all very well integrated and tasty. The fruitiness cannot be called broad, but its dark grapeyness is addictive. Active, but moderate effervescence. A bit powdery, but engaging mouthfeel. Lasting roasty finish is enhanced further by fair leafy hops. Very good.

In short: A strong and slightly chocolaty porter. No character. Slightly problematic chalky/vegetables malt tones. Bad batch?
How: Tap at Brouhaha
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head leaving good lacings
In long: A light nose of black chocolate. The carbonation is very smooth and the body is round and cushiony but a bit thin for a 9% porter. In mouth it was like the beer had two distinct malts that didn’t blend together. I was getting nice round chocolaty malts but also some burnt malts with a light vegetables character. Weird, I don’t know how else to describe it. Some molasses and dark fruits try to pierce through. The ashy/floury roastiness hides the sweetness. A sensation of a floury chocolate cake with a little burnt rubber here and there. I didn’t care much for this beer but I feel like there was something was off with my glass. Need to resample. I usually really like this brewpub so I was as disappointed as a Bangkok hooker after the navy has left town.

(Rating #1294)

On tap at TDD. Dark brown pour with hints of red. Nice roasted aroma mixed with candied fruits and coffee. Taste is not overwhelming, just a nice balance of fruity sweetness and roasted bitterness. Palate is a bit thin, but quite enjoyable.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2008 Sampled on tap at Vices et versa. Pours a deep black color with a light brown head. Very seductive aroma of black licorice, chocolate and roasted malt. Superb, balanced flavor of chocolate, black licorice and roasted malt with a mild bitter finish. The body is light and liquorous while the carbonation is gentle. It’s a very pleasant and dangerously easy to drink baltic porter.

On tap at the pub. On tap at the pub. Pours an opaque black body with low carbonation and a lasting beige creamy head. Lovely, complex malty/hoppy aroma with brown sugar, roasty, and fruity hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Well balanced taste. Texture is soft. Taste carries plummy, vineous notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Well done.
