4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rating #1073 - May 2, 2014 - bottle from Coop. Big bubbly black pour with a tan head that erupts from an aggressive pour. Aroma is heavy roast malt, caramel, mild vanilla. Taste is roast malt toffee sweetness, and an unchalky bitterness, medium-heavy alcohol character, but well tempered with the luxurious toffee sweetness. Impressive.

Dark pour with beige head. Aroma is sweet with cotton candy, toffee, dark chocolate, oak. Really neat smell. Sweet, roasted malts up front and with earthy hop bitterness. Nice smoothness from the barrel. Nice.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is maybe the best stout I?ve ever had. Good Lord. Thanks Dominic the alehunter for this liquid gold. Pours a somewhat thin black with lots of mocha head. Aromas are creamy and milky with red berry notes. Then vanilla, and milk chocolate come through. Flavors are so damn smooth. Milk chocolate and sweet vanilla. Like drinking a candy bar. A nice boozy finish. Finishes a touch thin and effervescent for a Stout.. But the flavor and aroma profile more than make up for it.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours solid black with two fingers of fluffy beige head diminishing gradually to a half finger skim and heavy lacing. Nose is bourbon, oak, and dark roasted malt, with sweet caramel and vanilla in the background. Taste opens up with sweet malt and vanilla, with strong bourbon and oak, finishing with bitter coffee and chocolate. Heavy-bodied, smooth, and creamy.
Oof. This is a massive, challenging beer. Complex and intimidating, it exhibits every bit of its 9% ABV right from the outset. Sweet and thick, it’s definitely a dessert beer.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle @ DTE tasting shared by JulianHuxley. Opaque black color, full sized decently lasting light brown head. Aroma is malts, a bit roasty, a bit winey and decently bourbon coming through. Taste malts, a bit roasty, even some fruityness in there and off course bourbon. The carbonation is a little fizzy though, a little high. Otherwise quite nice.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at the DTE tasting, Den Haag. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is fruit, roasted malt, light alcohol. The flavour is medium to strong bitter, light sweet with a rich vinous frothy alcoholic bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with lively carbonation. An unusual bourbon barrel aged beer. A little fizzy and more vinous than expected, but a great beer nevertheless.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver; dated Jul 2013
Black impenetrable color with generous, light brown, compact head. Nice aroma, not too strong, but harmonious; vinous, with gentle roasted malts and a hint of smoke, dates and roasted hazelnuts. The mouthfeel is bold and smooth; quite strong flavor of roasted malts and roasted hazelnuts, with moderate residual sweetness, some dark chocolate, light acidity, and vinous character; more chocolate and red wine than oak barrel; luckily the roasted malts are not ashy; comforting alcohol: the final tends to be a bit nutty.
I don’t find roastiness and acidity to play a good game together usually; despite that, it’s still an excellent beer, with a high price tag unfortunately.
