This imperial stout, aged in bourbon barrels, gives notes of roasted malt on a coffee, dark chocolate and caramel background. The velvety palate is sustained by a sagacious amount of alcohol warmth that give this beer the taste and feel of a fine spirit.

750mL thanks to ygtbsm94. Pours clear deep ruby. Small off white bubbles. Nose is savory, small smoke, baked cherries, dark chocolate. Taste is aerated, black cherry, minerally, small dark chocolate. Not so bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2012-12-31. Black body with a nice foamy brown head. Odd aroma, dry lightly dusty dark malt, very light roast, light alcohol character. 7+ Flavour is interesting, light funky vaguely Belgian character to dark malt, dark fruit and mild alcohol. Less roast than in the aroma. 7+ Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate is very effervescent, softly so. Decent, bit unusual I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of it. Bottle at Volo, Toronto

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, cocoa, nice bourbon, hints of oak into a bit of earth, some coffee into some yeast. Taste is a mix of cocoa powder, toffee, some molasses, touch of dark fruit into nice oak, vanilla, hints of bourbon into a bit of slight toast, finishing slightly dry, slightly sweet.

My Bottom Line :
American oak greenness mounts this Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout’s roasted malt flavors, while banana candy, vanilla and flowers build depth.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam garnishes the blackness.
-The mouthfeel is soft and plush. Not too heavy, and not lean either.
-Roasted malts create bitterness alongside resinous hops and lingering oak flavors.
-Alcohol is a discreet presence in the flavor profile.

Bottle - Oak and whisky notes, roast malts. berry and vanilla notes. Jet black and frothy brown head. Big whiskey notes, surprisingly milder and well rounded than the nose. You would have to be a huge whisky fan to truly enjoy this as that is the dominant flavor.

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Very dark pour, super-lively tan head. Aroma is full of hard roast, bitter chocolate, some licorice, with a touch of funk. On the palate, the funk becomes more evident, not dominating, but certainly assertive. Nowhere near the proportion in Bellwood’s Donkey Venom for example, but it is definitely here, and whether it is an infection or not, it made the drinking experience highly pleasurable. Panning through other top-raters, there are a couple of ratings that describe a light sourness, so I’m not the only one. Interesting and cool. A lightly soured BA impy!

Bottle from an old trade (Dated 4/2012). Now available locally. Pours with a very dark brown, but not quite inky pour, medium sized fluffy brown head. Medium retention, good lace. Aromas are of coffee, dark chocolate, pancakes and bourbon (typical morning). Some minerality, very mild esters, vanilla, lactone, lightly spicy spirit character. Medium caramel to butterscotch roundness. Flavors are vinous and possibly a touch tart (definitely low pH for an imperial stout). Dark fruits, currant, light barrel, dark chocolate and caramel. I’d say there is definitely an infection starting up (which is a shame). Still quite drinkable now. Barrel character is moderate to light, but there is a medium strong tannin influence on the mouthfeel. A bit thin, livelier carbonation than expected. Medium warmth. Glad I drank this on now.

Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head and a bourbon and chocolate aroma. There is a carbonated treacle flavor with a delayed bourbon trail.

Bottle shared at the DTE tasting thanks to Julienhuxley. Pours dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, vinous aspects, bourbon/vanilla behind with toffee, light roast and chocolate. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Light full bodied with moderate carbonation.

[4225-20111231] Tap. Roasted dark fruity raisin aroma. Black body with a long-lasting creamy tan head. Chocolate roasted wood nut flavour has a long roasty aftertaste. Full body. Tasty, drinkable. (8/3+/8/4/17) 4.0
