Bottle. Weird that they have 3 beers called Pitoune. Highly carbonated yellow beer that remains tame but with a lasting thick white cream head. Light aroma but bold flavour. Strong spice you can feel throughout your body but does not beat up the palate. Soft almost Saison spiciness on a clean body.

Wow. From the first sniff, this one is a winner. Herbs and a bit of spice on the nose, smooth and clean finish. This is a really great, drinkable beer. Thanks to the good folks from Artisan Ales for brining this to Alberta!

(Rating #5234)

My Bottom Line:
Pure, cushy cereals join herbal hops in this most generous of unfiltered Pilseners.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam settles atop the misty straw blond, lacing beautifully.
-The hops also contribute citrusy tips.
-The flavor profile could use a little more zip.
-This brew has the potential of becoming something marvelous. If the flavor profile can follow the nose, that is...
-The aroma is more evocative at a warmer temperature, which is not often the case with this style.
-This doesn’t taste like an emulation of German Pilseners, nor does it taste like a Svetly Lezak.

Bottle.

375ml brown bottle. Pale gold pour, a bit unclear. Large soapy looking white cap with soapy lacing. Nose has grains, grass and some mineral notes. Taste has grassy hops, grain and bready malts. Light bitterness and a grassy hoppy aftertaste. Overall, a very enjoyable and hugely drinkable pils, quite crisp and clean, enough hops to keep it interesting, strong carbonation. I had no idea I was buying a pils when I got this, I wish I would have grabbed the 600ml bottle instead.

Very pale golden pils, bright white lasting head and unfiltered to the point where it may very well contain more than a few grains of wheat. Bright floral, spicy, lemony hops share the stage with fresh bready malts. The adequately balanced sulphury egg-white component adds a touch of complexity to that aroma. In mouth, we’re facing a rather full body for the genre, the carbonation being perhaps just a notch below the average bottled pils and then again perhaps a few notches above keller lagers - still the end result is that it’s fairly malty in its mouth presence and does not showcase a crispiness or dryness. The hop flavour also heads more toward the backseat in mouth - letting more room to malts, whereas it was possibly the dominating ingredient in terms of aroma. As it closes though, a fair dose of bitterness chimes in and readjusts the balance. Honestly, this is a beer I frequently visit and was immensely looking forward to as a strong advocate of pale lagers, but as of this rating, I’ve had varied experiences. All were good to excellent and knowing the head brewer’s partiality toward blondies, I expect this can only improve as they grow more comfortable around their new brewing equipment so that we end up with more excellence than goodness. The score is an average of the couple of samples I’ve had since a first visit at La Cuvée in February 2013.
