Out of The Vaults, Leicester. Ribena ruby half haloed with froth. Leafy hopcone aroma with berry fruit hints. Good waft of perfumey floral hops, followed by berry fruit, caramel, light nuts and biscuit. Finishes dry with a touch of paracetemol. Very solid, tangily hopped bitter.

Cask at The Green Man and Royal Hotel, Ashborne, Derbyshire. Amber with a white head. Strong malty aroma, sweet caramel, almost liquorice. Smooth, oily malt taste, leathery and old fashioned. Some bitterness. It might have been the roaring fire in the bar, or the arduous walk I’d just completed in Dovedale, but I thought this was pretty good.
