4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Best when consumed before 27/07/14. Poured into a La Chouffe glass. I’m fairly confident that this is the first beer that I’ve tried from Southern France. I don’t know if it’s a proper saison or biere de garde, for that matter. Whatever that means. The brewery reportedly uses a German yeast strain - the whole backstory is actually quite interesting (organic farmer, who mostly makes goat cheese, decided to make an organic beer with his own barley).
The beer pours a warm shade of orange. It’s quite cloudy, though you can just barely see through the glass at points. The head is a pale beige, rocky and huge. Excellent retention and lacing. There’s obviously some nice protein content. Big clumps of bubbles stick to the glass even on the second pour, and the head lasts for ages.
Aroma is light and subtle. I’m picking up pears, pineapples, bright grain, grassy hops, minerals and a dusty farmhouse character. It’s all quite gentle, and the sweet barley flavors come through the most. You can smell the grain quality. There’s a very light apricot, raisin tone, but it’s delicate and works very well with the beer.
The taste has a wonderfully pleasant barley flavor. It’s soft and sweet and fruity. Apples, pears, peaches, grapes, apricots, all come to mind, but it’s not the sort of thing that hits you over the head. Delightfully and authentically rustic. Fresh and refreshing. The finish adds in some grassy, floral hops and a touch of mineral dryness. Light bitterness coats the mouth after the beer is gone.
The mouthfeel is probably my favorite part. This is a gentle but creamy and full beer. I’d almost guess that it used some other grain, but it’s not quite akin to the mouthfeel of anything in particular. This beer has its own unique feel.
Very interesting beer. And I’m pleased to have finally decided to pick up a bottle. This beer would pair wonderfully with food. It probably would shine most with cheeses, particular its farm mate, goat cheese, but it would just make for a great all-purpose table beer, really. Great light barley flavor. Nothing too strong or rough on the palate. It’s a very pleasant beer with solid flavor.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Pours a super foamy peaches and cream head atop a hazy tan body that looks vigorously active with carbonation. The nose seems rather thick and soapy with Belgian notes having difficulty in making their way through the dense thicket.Wafer thin body with unsubstantial malting and touches of soapy esters. Hay and hop twang finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle picked up at La Fromagerie in Marylebone. Cool bottle design. Orange-tan colour, white head. Spicy yeasty character, grainy malt, very light hopping. Quite subtle but very flavoursome, I think the best biere de garde I’ve had.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 Pours initially clear with some cloudiness towards the end, you will find some sediment on the bottom of your last glass for sure. Largely floral aroma is penetrated by lighter notes of malt and hops. You will also notice a medium-size off-white head. taste initially hit me as semi-sweet with almost grape / champaign flavors that progress into and ends with a medium bodied, slightly bitter floral taste with a lot of carbonation. All in all I would say the taste is pretty clean with a bit of floral / hoppy bite coming in at the end, leaving a very pleasant taste on the tongue. On another note, the guy that brews this is extremely cool, his brewery is in southern france and he used a very sustainable / organic method (His kettles are heated with manure from the goats he uses to make cheese with)

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a lightly hazy orange color, fairly clear at the start of the 750, muddy and cloudy as can be towards the end (and yes I did pour carefully throughout). The head is a medium size, white in color & leaves a good lacing on the glass.
The aroma is malty and has a lot of perfumey floral pungency that does settle down a bit in time. The beer displays a nice light barnyard aroma and some graininess.
The flavor has a nice balance of lightly toasty malt and hop flavor both earthy and leafy. The beer is nicely bitter and has a lot of bright fruitiness. The beer has mild grassy flavors and is generally dry throughout but not without some subdued malty sweetness.
This is really very enjoyable, I always get so suspicious when my Biere de Garde or Saison are as amber hued as this is, but more times than the old world examples of this are fantastic and this is no exception. I will say though that at first it took me a minute to catch up with what was going on here but by the time the bottle was finished I just wanted another.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, shared @ the Purple Pig. Light golden, hazy, with a solid frothy white head that holds beautifully. Very interesting aroma that required some careful consideration to pin down. Both fruity and vegetal at the same time, like starfruit, or guava and celery, with creamy undertones. Flavours lean toward vegetal and lightly herbal, with straw-like malts. Creamy mouthfeel. Very fresh and lively.

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Cloudy orangy pour. Smells bready/caramel like a bock. Smooth caramel flavor. Little malt/hops in the aftertaste. It’s rather nice.
