COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It exists, it’s friendly, and it definitely doesn’t suck… unless it’s offered a straw. A blend of Golden Promise, Brown, CaraPils and Black Patent Malts, along with a bit of Roasted Barley, gives those searching for the extraordinary cause for obsession. Fuggle hops tame the malty monster, and bottle-conditioning refines its character, making it a suitable guest at any get-together.

Nice deep, dark reddish pour. Aroma of roasted malts, nuts, vegetables, and plums. Flavors of dark fruits, biscuits, and brandy. Boozy finish, and a tad bit harsh. Scottish ales are not meant to be hoppy, they showcase roasty malt character, and this kinda does. My only complaint is that it needs more peat and perhaps a bit more body. I didn’t mind it though.

This is very difficult to rate. It’s the second beer I’ve had by this brewery that was sour, and I don’t think that’s intentional given it’s a Scottish Ale. I enjoy sour, I just don’t get why this beer would be sour. The appearance was dark brown, aroma of roasted malts, but flavour is first sour, then some sweet malts. There’s no expiration date on the bottle to help me figure out if this bottle was expired, or perhaps infected.

I toured the brewery a few times this past year. When I went with non-craft beer drinkers, this was among their favorites from the brewery. A nice smooth beer, a little more malt than hops, but well balanced. Desires a little more flavor for my palate

This one was picked up at the Wine and Spirits shop in Walker in the bomber. A good malt mix for this style, maybe could have used a little more roasted barley. The hops balanced well without being noticed. It represents the style well.

Winterfest ’11. I cannot be as generous as Ben, I found this nearly undrinkable. Very low carbonation, which could be ok for the style. Brown color. Unprocessed grain flavor and aroma, nothing to like really. The malt is there has very little flavor at all. This just didn’t work out.

Minnesota Winterfest 2011. Dark brown color with a small head. Chocolaty aroma. Light malt and caramel taste. Mild biscuit character.
