Cask: Occasional.
A refreshing dark ale. Not to be mistaken for a stout, citrus hops give a clean and unusually refreshing finish.

Cask, The Criterion, Leicester. Very dark brown with a beige bubbly foam. Aromas are floral with woody pine and roast coffee. Coal with pepper and hints of dark berries. Earthy with liquorice. Flavours are dry and roasted with woody nutty notes. Chocolate with weetabix and earthy apple. Nice.

Served on cask into an English half jug at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green (Jan ’12). Copper brown in colour with a thin tan head. Aroma comes across as vaguely citrus, but not too strong, also malt on the nose. In the taste, light roasting, slight chocolate, didn’t get any sense of the citrus. A woody/earthy bitter hop taste on the palate. Medium to light in body with a bitter aftertaste.

Cask at the Market Porter. Deep reddish copper in colour with a thin beige head; rich aroma of roasted malts; silky smooth, with a deeply roasted malt flavour and some hints of chocolate and smoke; the finish is strongly bitter with some citric hops and is prolonged and dry. A satisfying pint.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Clear brown beer, residual tan head. Light dry palate. Very low carbonation. Some milky sweet malt. Some interesting fruity licquorice flavours in the mid which even out to a sweetish fruity end. Semi dry finish. Nice complex fruits in the dark ale.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Pours a rich garnet with a tan head. Ripe, dark fruits on the nose. Interesting flavor, lightly sweet, some toasty bread, mild nuts, some roasted malts and cocoa, then some mild citrus bitterness. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Finishes dry with some ash, bit of wood and roasted malts, some earthy, herbal hops in the throat. Not too shabby!

Cask-conditioned at the Lord Moon of the Mall (JDW), London 22/03/2011. Dark, reddish brown with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, berry fruit and chocolate aroma. Flavour had plenty more chocolate and fruit, with some added orange and decent bitter finish. Enjoyable.
