rauchbier (2877), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Jul 7, 2004 Bottle conditioned, from Fabeers in York. Impenetrable jet black, fluffy longlasting beige head and gentle condition. Initial plastic phenol aroma soon disappears leaving roast barley, liquorice and fruity tartness, with some chocolate as it warms. Good initial liquorice flavour leads into powdery chocolate and roast. Finish is long and burnt with a faint background fruitiness. Label describes it as a Black Porter but it leans a lot in the direction of a dry stout.
johndoughty (1692), cheslyn hay, West Midlands, England Apr 19, 2004 Dark and licouricey this is a well rounded stout. Plenty of body
with a pleasant black hue. An above average stout from a brewery that is producing some very good beers. chriso (4420), London, Greater London, England Jun 14, 2004 Very dark oak brown colour. Coffee extract aroma - a little musty, with a resinous edge. The taste also has a woody, resinous character with roasted malt, licorice and a slight sourness at the end. I thought this was more like a porter than a stout. Whatever it is, I liked it. Cask (gravity), Thurrock Beer Festival.
duff (5407), Sydney, Australia, Surrey, England Jul 13, 2004 Cask@Dartford BF. Maybe i liked this more than i normally would have, because i was desperate for something that was dark, and at least half good at this stage of the fest. This was better than just good. Slightly acidic, bitter chocolate, roasty malts. Oaty and lightly chalky, dry finish, tasty one. SilkTork (3950), Rochester, Kent, England Jul 10, 2004 Updated: Jul 12, 2004Dartford fest. Gravity. As far as I’m aware this is my first Leek beer from the cask. Berry aroma with a touch of coffee. Taste is dry, roasty, chalky with light touches of dark berry and a hint of acidity in the finish. Pleasant - and a nice break from all the diacetyl bitters.
