Realy dark brown double. Taste of burned sugar and fruits. Lacks some spices.

Bottle (at room temp): Poured a cloudy deep brown color ale with a super huge head with perfect retention. Aroma of caramel malt with distinctive Belgian yeast. Taste is a well balance mix between sweetness, strong malt with a nice touch of caramel and some subtle sourness with light funky yeast. Body is a bit thin for the style but overall this is a very nice dubbel.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2005 Rerate: Bottle at Pub Italia in Ottawa. Pours a dark ruby-brown with a huge light-brown head. Aroma of malt, yeast, chocolate, dark fruit, spices and sugar. Flavour follows the aroma but is a little over-carbonated. I liked it more than last time but it’s still dissapointing.

bottle at Ciro’s. Pours a dark brown, almost black, with an average diminishing tan head. Aroma was hard to place for me, some sweet malt, dried fruit, yeast and more. The flavour was a let down, the aroma smelt like a Dubbel but it didn’t taste like one and it was also too mild. There was sweet malt, spices, fruit and a weird sour-like taste. I did not care for the aftertaste. It’s a decent enough beer but it’s a little dull and nothing special.

Bottle shared with GregClow at Ciro’s. Nice spicy and pepper aroma with a yeast quality to it as well. Dark brown in the glass, thick frothy brown head - a nice looking and smelling beer. I mention that because the taste is a let down. You’re promised complexity and flavour but get a thinner than expected bland taste. It was a little bottle like stale as well. Taste was kind of fruity and slightly sweet, but it does not mix at all with the aroma or appearance in my mind. Quite thin. An interesting contrasting beer that disappointed.

Bottle at Ciro’s - shared with tupalev. Dark ruby-brown with a small tan head. Aroma of dark dried fruit (figs, prunes), malt, yeast and cocoa. Thin body. Flavour is pleasant but uninspired, with notes of brown sugar, sweet fruit and malt, and some bitter yeast in the dry finish. OK, but not a shining example of the style.

17 June 2005 - (Brasserie Lefeb) - Big fruit and complex hop spirit aroma. Cloudy dark brown colour, wide sheet lacing and creamy head. Malty fruit and hop explosion of flavours, but lacks complexity (neither subtle or earthy). Some metallic finish with a thick mouthfeel.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: SEP 8, 2005 Bottle (330ml). At Volo. Poured a slightly hazy deep dark cola red-brown, very bubbly with a huge creamy-foamy light tan head - amazing drapes of spidery, sticky lacing left behind. Aroma of sweet dark roasted malt, brown sugar, raisins, off-dry white wine, apples, pears and a cheerful fresh muffin yeastiness. Flavour followed the nose, with some anise, hot caramel fudge and plums coming in; very sweet, but it opened up with a little bitterness at the end of the glass, either hops or alcohol, couldn’t really say. Mouthfeel was slightly stick, and a touch thin. Very enjoyable, a nice sweet not too strong brune/dubbel.

Brown reddish body with an off white head. Malty aroma with a dark fruit sweetness and a light alcohol note. Raisin and plum sweet flavor with hints of anise.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Opaque dark brown, light tan head. Slight holiday spice, cookie, caramel malts in aroma and flavor. Somewhat flat, too much so even for this style. Still a good beer though; very sweet aftertaste that reminds me of stealing cookie dough from the fridge when I was young.
