Ernest (4254), Boulder, Colorado, USA Mar 1, 2002 Updated: Jun 26, 2005 Bottle, Brussels, May 2005. Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel, chocolate), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of toffee and raisin. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/creamy texture, lively carbonation. Again, as with the Bruin (Prima Melior), this outperformed expectations and remains a favorite of mine for Belgian dubbels/browns.
Skidds (186), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Sep 24, 2008 Poured a dense dark brown with an off-white almost brown head. Aroma and flavour were primarily of dark fruits, nuts, chocolate and spices. The finish was quite spicy. Glad to have tried it. ogivlado (2399), Zagreb, Croatia Aug 31, 2008 Bottled(330ml). -Reddish pale brown coloured, small off-white head, discreet malty nose. Light roasted malt, caramel and dark fruits with notes of chocolate and nuts. Also few licorice hints. Mild alcoholic rather dry finish. St Feuillien Brune is much better but this is still good abbey dubbel. note666 (223), Eindhoven, Netherlands Aug 23, 2008 330 ml bottle. dark brown colour. bif creme head. not very strong in taste. low alcohol in taste. Large beige creamy head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Dark cola like color. (it was compared with a cola). Aroma was quit lovely with notes of fruit, caramelized, yeast, hint of sweet liquorish, mild toasted malt and what could appear as sweet chocolate. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor. Lingering sweet fruity caramelized finish.
