If the nose on this bad boy were a little more complex it would be damn near perfect. Deep mahogony, flesh colored head. Billowy and cloying the head is magnificent. Frothy. Nose: Chalky like a Chimay bleu. Although this pervades it is accompanied by notes of bakers chocolate. Flavors explode on the palate. Velvety texture. Plums, aniseed, chocolate, rum. This is the best Belgian strong money can buy. If you find it you must buy it.
G-rat drpimento (534), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Mar 5, 2005 Had this several years ago. I remember wishing that I could get more. I think it was on draft once or twice at Bodega, but not sure. You understand with this hobby, being addled is a factor.... It was a great beer in the traditional Belgian Brown sense but with more of everything and very drinkable. hughie (2415), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Feb 21, 2006 Dark brown with a massive beige head. The aroma is a glorious, decadent chocolate-malt-liquorice feast. The taste is honeyed, smooth with a little orange sourness, sweet marzipan and almonds, and a perfectly balanced dry finish. Can beer ever be better than this? Cobra (1041), In the snake pit, Maryland, USA Nov 12, 2007 Definitely a dubbel. 750 ml. brown, corked & caged Belgian bottle. No freshness date seen. Loud pop releases the cork. Highly carbonated.
Poured out a deep chocolate brown, with some red highlights. Massive, tan colored sticky head clings to the chalice like a drowning man to a life preserver. Big malty aromas, mixed with raisins and dried fruit dominate the aromas. Flavors are of dried fruits, some spices, massive malts, some brown sugar & candied pears. Thick mouthfeel, rich & chewy. Fabulouso!
Best Belgian I’ve had in years.
