Grovlam (3204), Copenhagen, Denmark May 21, 2008 Bottle @ Ølbaren. Large creamy off-white head that was quit nice and really lasted. Good display of lacework. Dark mahogany like color. Aroma of chocolate, date and mix of dried fruit, mild toasted malt, lots of fruity notes, mild yeast, brown sugar, pears and maybe even a hint of smoke. Excellent complexity in this Belgian Strong. Full bodied with an average carbonation and thick smooth texture. Moderated sweet flavor with mild bitterness. Lingering dried fruity smooth finish. What a surprise.
SoberCajun (32), Somerville, Massachusetts, USA Sep 28, 2008 One of my favorites from the belgian beer tasting in Boston 9/27/08. Wonderful fruit and caramel in perfect balance, with delicious coriander notes. Exemplifies why this is one of the best styles in my mind. heemer77 (3786), Savannah, Missouri, USA Sep 23, 2008 A light brown head with a deep brown body that shows garnet when held ot light. The aroma has some sweet pears and cinnamon. There is an interesting bit of earthy yogurt that is the base of the other smells. The taste has some sweet cola and plums. There is also some brown sugar molasses goodness, especially in the finish. The body is highly carbonated. A nice brew. fishingnet (861), Brandon, Florida, USA Sep 21, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Sebletitje. Pours dark brown with a large tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of tart cherries, sweet malt, and yeast. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good. sebletitje (404), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 20, 2008 Brought back from Belgium, bought at the brewery.
Pours dark brown, with brownish head.
Aroma, dark fruits, caramel malts.
Taste, dark fruits (prune and cherry), hoppy and yeasty, medium carbonation. Cane sugar.
A really fine ale filled with nice flavors. after4ever (1753), Brier, Washington, USA Sep 19, 2008 330. Pours a deep grainy, nearly opaque ebony with a thick, surging, moussy tan head. Nice mild molasses and caramel nose, some licorice too. Very fruity and spicy. Sweet. Creamy medium body, very soft carb. Easy to drink, hides the alcohol well. Mid-palate doesn’t show much distinction, just the usual suspects from the nose coming around again. Bit thin. Neutral-ish finish. Nice and likable, but not going to knock you out and drag you home.
