3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Shakesbeere (187) - Oxford, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - JUN 9, 2011
75cL bottle. Pours a golden pear with champagne-esque carbonation and a diminishing fizzy white head. Smells of light fruit (pear and white grape), yeast, and light spice. Tastes of yeast, alcohol, spice (clove, chai, and a bit of coriander), and pear. Very crisp. Mouthfeel is medium body with somewhat smooth fizzy carbonation. Finish is spicy with the addition of slight bitter and banana flavors. Develops a raisin aftertaste. Overall, pretty good, but a bit heavy on the spice -- could do with a strengthening of the other flavors and a better mask for the alcohol. Still a solid beer, just not the best.

Poured a beautiful golden, clear color with tall, frothy head. Aroma was banana-like and yeasty. Medium sweetness, smooth to drink. Medium body, ave carbonation, with slightly bitter, lasting finish. A good belgian abbey ale, at a good price. Taste to price ratio is high.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JamesCory (46) - Cedar Falls, Iowa, USA - MAY 31, 2011
330 ml bottle poured into an 8 oz glass
Aroma: Caramel and banana mix with yeast and slight citrus. Very aromatic.
Appearance: Nothing special, some movement in the glass, but the appearance is deceptive for such a nice brew.
Taste: Starts sweet, with some fading to bitter on the aftertaste.
Palate: Lively carbonation, somewhat oily texture, and medium-light bodied.
Overall: This rating is for the bottle purchased stateside, at Binny’s in HIghland Park, IL. I bought a bottle in London and distinctly remember thinking this was a mid-4’s beer. Something is lost in transit.
However, having said that, it is still a very nice beer. Almost Germanic in taste, reminds me of a typical hefe more than the Belgian Ale that RB says it is, despite the geographic origin.
