4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours opaque coffee black with a thick, rather fine-bubbled, persistent tan head that leaves generous lacing. Aroma has quality coffee, roast malt, molasses, and shy chocolate notes. Flavor takes all the tones of the aroma and tosses in caramel, miso and subtle licorice, as well as pumping up the chocolate a bit. Viscous texture has good fizz and leaves a roast malt and coffee finish that has more than a hint of miso. Bold, rich, distinctive - this one is likely to blow you away.

Bottle. Given the purveyor from whom I bough this, I’d not be surprised if it’s aged on the retail aisle for quite some time. This opened almost completely flat. No fizz, almost no head. There’s also little aroma. But this still drinks with an oomph, and a big coffee-laden flavor holds up quite well. Makes me want to move where it’s cold again. (#5950, 3/29/2015)

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: Slips out a black body with a quickly receding (but what’s left lasts) beige head.
Smell: Well roasted malts with espresso extract giving a liquory hint, powdered anise, chocolate Whoppers, mild hops hinting a little bit of citrus rind.
Taste: A start of strong espresso-flecked roasted malts glazed with undoubtedly bitter chocolate. Relatively light sweetness. Low dark fruitiness. Steely, floral, citrusy hops with a growing, encroaching bitterness. Drying, bittered, slightly boozy burn of a finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel overall.
Overall: I’d hoped for more. No, it’s not bad, but it falls far short of so many great stouts out there today.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Roasted soy and coffee aroma. Inky. Chocolate, smooth, rich, good pH, roasted but not too coffeeish. Balanced, drinkable and chummy without pretense. Mouthy. On tap, Baby Proof.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sort of underwhelming. Aroma is a bit boozy--not in a good way. The nose also has notes of roasted malt, coffee and rum. Taste is better with lots of chocolate, roasted malts and sweetness and faint coffee. Finish is a little thin for an imperial but good. I just wanted better aroma, body and depth from an imperial stout...missed opportunity.
