This winter seasonal is in the style of a black IPA. It has the characteristics of an American IPA in having intense bold hop flavors with a twist of dark malt bringing out the roasted chocolate flavor. Three different types of hops and imported dark crystal malts are used to maximize this flavor and create fresh hop taste and aroma. It is dry-hopped in the fermenter to give it its great hop aroma. This brew was meant to be consumed immediately upon opening on that cold winter evening. Enjoy

Really nice black IPA. Roasty chocolatey and a well balanced hop bitterness and aroma. A little on the expensive side but that may be due to it being imported. Great label, good to see a bodyboarder rather than a surfer!

650 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, long duration, beige head, with some lacing, over a clear, brown (SRM 25) body....nose is dusty cocoa, coffee, chocolate, hints of pine, citrus....taste is cocoa, chocolate, then lighter coffee, citrus, pine bitterness....mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, carbonation low adding a prickly spritz. This meets the style quite nicely, is quite nourishing, with adequate complexity in both aroma and flavor. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

The pour is nearly black with garnet edges and a moderately full, beige, dense, pillowy head which settles to a thin layer and leaves sticky lace. The nose is roasty, dark toasted breads, some burnt chocolate, some ruby red grapefruit notes, and light pine in there too. The flavor is more IPA with pine resins, pink grapefruit, some mineral, light herbal, some chocolate, and cedar notes. The palate is moderate, soft to lively, and creamy. The finish is drying a bit, still chocolatey and slightly roasty, grapefruit, and pine resins. The bitterness is nice and the roast notes do not get overwhelmingly dry. The bitterness is a bit low and the palate is a bit thin. Nice beer but just adequate.

Bottle @ home. Dark brown appearance with a big brown head. Charred, roasty dark chocolate malty, light citrusy, piney hoppy aroma. Burnt chocolate malty, slightly acidic coffee, lightly fruity, charred piney flavor. Fairly typical black ipa and not all that interesting.

On tap. Pours with a black body and a tan head that lasts. Aromas are fruity, mild esters, citrus, light tropical fruit hop character, dry roast, coffee, mild bready malt. Flavors show a big dry coffee presence, balancing citrusy hops, grapefruit and pine. Nicely dry and seems mostly devoid of caramel malt (a good thing). Tangerine zest. Medium bubbles, dry with a lasting bitterness. Medium bodied.

Verbiage on the bottle says that this is meant to be consumed on a cold winter’s evening, but I have to tell you it went down very, very well on a warm spring afternoon.
