COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Okay, this one isn’t for everybody – yet. Over the years we’ve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldn’t make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didn’t want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and we’re back playing again with a few new test batches that we’re sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled ‘Extremely Boring’. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and you’ll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

Eh this was okay. Nothing really notable at all. Hardly any distinguishable hop characteristics and an overpowering malt presence. I understand it’s an "english style" but it’s kind of weird and sweet and gross. Really surprised by this one I was expecting a lot better.

Draft at Khyber Pass. Clear dark gold pour. Frothy off-white head. Bready with medium caramel flavors. Pecans. Overripe bananas. Dulce de leche. Toast with dark honey marmalade. Light toffee. Hops add a bit of spice in the finish. Cannot help feel some eucalyptus is in the mix. Bit unusual. Worth having.

From a bottle. Pours golden with a medium white head. Aroma has hints of bread with little to no hops coming through. Taste is initially bitter but there is solid malt underpinning. Good, dry finish but then a bit of sweetness creeps in again. Good mouth feel throughout with a reasonably complex flavor. Nothing overwhelming, but quite solid.

One of the great american English-style IPA’s. My favorite type of beer which is similar to a brown ale with a little hop flavor.

Good brewsky with nice aroma of honey and carmel. There is some small hopy taste, bitternes but way back. For Left Hand I would say its not all that fantastic.

From bottle. Pours a murky gold with hardly any head. Malty, slightly metallic nose. A little thin, but nice carbonation. Earthy and herbal as advertised. Nice bitter finish. Not the hop bomb that we’ve come to expect from most IPAs, but the English style is a refreshing take. The whole is definitely better than the parts in this one. I have noticed this beer tends to be a bit delicate and turns when it gets old. Pay attention to the "best by" date on the bottle. When it’s fresh, it’s terrific.

From bottle. Mild hop aromas, a little grassy and herbal. Mild carbonic and metallic notes, just a bit of staleness or oxidation. Rich golden amber clear with foamy-creamy off-white lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts with light malt sweetness and some caramel. Moderate hop bitterness, carbonic acidity, and dry bite at the finish. Mild bitter after.

Good nor great, pale color, indifferent aroma and taste. Maybe a bottle that day too long, left hand usually does better.

From 12oz bottle to shaker. Pour is a clear yellow with a thick white head. Nose is hoppy, floral, spice, malt. Taste is light-medium body, bitter. Finishes sharp with a nice touch of spice at the end. Wouldn’t guess that this is 7%, not a bad IPA.

This one poured a hazy yellow color with a white head. Aroma was of pale yellow malt, grassy , some citrus and wheat. Falvor was hoppy wheat beer basically. Meh.
