Okay, this one isn’t for everybody – yet. Over the years we’ve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldn’t make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didn’t want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and we’re back playing again with a few new test batches that we’re sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled ‘Extremely Boring’. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and you’ll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

Backlog rating on 9-23-2012 (Bottle) The appearance of this beer is a sall off-white head that mostly diminishes, slightly hazy yellow body, slow rising carbonation, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt and earthy hops. The flavor is light bitter, citrus hops, caramel malt, and has a dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. For the style, this beer is not very hoppy/bitter tasting. The ABV is well masked.

Pour is golden with a small white head. Aroma is lite but pleasant. A very dry beer that has cool tropical fruit flavors but all the good gets washed by a iron/slate flavor that is a little off putting.

Pours a hazy orange yellow, strongly carbonated with a good foam head. No aroma, aside from a wisp of malt. Very light malt and basic hops flavor, almost watery. Slightly sticky mouthfeel with a slight numbing sensation and stale - ish bitter aftertaste.

Tap at Friends of Ham, Leeds. Just about clear, pale copper colour. Thin, tight, sticky white head. Lots of sweet, digestive biscuit malt. Fusty mandarin. Taste is fusty sweet, first off, then dry, and light bitter. Full palate. Bitter finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Pub Florentine. Thanks zvikar. Clear gold with white film. Grain, a little floral and a little skunky aroma, green, old hops mouthfeel and bitterness. Medium-bodied, grainy and bitter finish.

Transfer from BA review on 2-12-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a hazy orange color with a one finger white head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a moderate level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma is heaviest of an earthy and citrus hops along with a nice bready base. Along with these aromas are some lighter notes of tropical fruit as well as a little bit of apricot. Taste – At the start of the taste a bready and grapefruit flavor greets the tongue along with some more grassy hop flavors. Some flavors of a light fruit flavor as well as a little bit of pineapple flavor soon come to the tongue. These sweeter flavors disappear soon however as flavors of grapefruit citrus hop grow stronger in nature with them being joined by some hop flavors of an earthy variety. When combined with the rest of the flavors, a bitter and dry, hoppy and bready flavor is left on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The beer was slightly on the creamier and thicker side with a carbonation level that was average. The thicker body was nice for the bready flavors of the brew as well as gave a chance for all the hop flavors a chance to e fully sensed by the tongue. Overall –A pretty nice English style IPA. It’s on the drier side with a good blend of citrus, earthy and herbal hop. Well worth a try.
