COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Okay, this one isn’t for everybody – yet. Over the years we’ve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldn’t make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didn’t want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and we’re back playing again with a few new test batches that we’re sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled ‘Extremely Boring’. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and you’ll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

On tap Brew Dock Dublin. Disappointing. Despite 7% abv insipidly sweet with hardly any hop presence.

Poured clear golden with a thin, frothy white head. Aroma of floral hops and some sweetness. Medium body, flavour of sweet malt and some caramel. Not very hoppy, a bit average.

Bottle-purchased Jan 2013-pours bright orange with a small soapy white head with sparse lacing. nose is musty gym sock-damn thats bad-spruce, herbal tea, jock strap, rubber, damn that is bad! flavors of metallic piney hops, spruice, lite toasted malt with lots of metallic notes. long metallic finish. palate is fizzy and somewhat thin. This could be good fresh however, this is a 4 month old bottle. this is bad!

Bottle. Quite caramelly aroma. Not sweet as such, but a sort of roasted caramel. Clear amber colour. Small white head. The flavour is also roasted and caramelly, like the aroma. Good clean bitterness. Tastes more like a brown ale than English style IPA. But quite quaffable.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with airy white head. Clear aroma of malt and hops with a citrus note. Pleasant, bitter taste of hops but most of all malt with a caramel note. Dry finish. A good thing, without any IPA snobbery.

12 oz bottle. Pours a golden yellow with a thin white head. Aroma of rotten grapes and skunky. Sour rotten fruit and floral hops. Worst ipa I have ever had!

JStax (1665) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - DEC 27, 2012
Poured on draft. Pours a translucent copper with a thinner head of white foam. Aroma is mildly citrusy and a touch piny. Taste is just a Tad bitter throughout with a mild sweetness detected. Medium body and slick mouthfeel.

Hiero (52) - Dallas, Texas, USA - DEC 22, 2012
This is an okay IPA. I was expected something more from the bottle design and the name. Kind of a letdown. It has a generic taste and is not big, bold or unique.

Bottle. Pours a hazy light amber with a gigantic foamy white head that lingers forever, seriously. Very light aroma, of citrus hops, malt, sugar. Taste is odd, of herbal hops, malt, grass, soap, bread. Lingering soapy bread. Doesn’t work at all.
