COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Okay, this one isn’t for everybody – yet. Over the years we’ve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldn’t make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didn’t want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and we’re back playing again with a few new test batches that we’re sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled ‘Extremely Boring’. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and you’ll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

Among my New Year’s Resolutions is that I will try better to enjoy IPAs as soon I buy them and not make the excuse of "seeing how these age." So I just got this loose bottle at Binny’s. Has a friendly, hoppy smell right under the cap. If I’m not mistaken, both English earthy bitterness and a bit of American pine in here. Pours a puffy head over a golden, slightly amber beer, well-filtered, with a swirl of bubbles. Taste seems to have malt and hops running on separate tracks here. By now I think the Pacific hops are in the majority, focus on pine flavors, but with some extra bitterness besides. malts are quite distinct, with just a bit of light toast to them. Probably much sweeter than I’m tasting here, thanks to the extra bitterness. There should probably more distinct hop character beyond the mere bitterness, but I guess that’s the profile they want to achieve, so go right on ahead, guys.

Draught at against the grain. Weird funky fruit nose, flavour is spicy hops, cardboard. Big body, fizzy. Not good.

Pour is golden with a small white head. Aroma is lite but pleasant. A very dry beer that has cool tropical fruit flavors but all the good gets washed by a iron/slate flavor that is a little off putting.

Backlog rating on 9-23-2012 (Bottle) The appearance of this beer is a sall off-white head that mostly diminishes, slightly hazy yellow body, slow rising carbonation, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt and earthy hops. The flavor is light bitter, citrus hops, caramel malt, and has a dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. For the style, this beer is not very hoppy/bitter tasting. The ABV is well masked.

Pours a hazy orange yellow, strongly carbonated with a good foam head. No aroma, aside from a wisp of malt. Very light malt and basic hops flavor, almost watery. Slightly sticky mouthfeel with a slight numbing sensation and stale - ish bitter aftertaste.
