Coffee porter released for Colorado Beer Week 2011.

In honor of Craft Beer Weeks all around the US, Left Hand created a special one-off beer called Beer Week Sauce Porter. This American-style porter contains a fair amount of coffee; which is just the thing that you’ll need to keep going through this week!

Pint from draft at Cedar Creek Pub. Pours very dark with active carbonation and a small ring of a head. Aroma has some coffee in there, but I want more. It’s very subtle. It could almost pass for a standard roasty porter without the coffee. The flavor is ashy with a light milkiness, faint coffee and dark chocolate. Palate is medium and rather effervescent. This is a tasty beer, but it aggravates me that the coffee is so light. Weak sauce, indeed.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a near clear deep brown with a tan head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has a nice rich bitter coffee note with backing roasted malts and dark grains. Flavor has the same rich coffee bitterness the mellows to a light finish of dark grains and roasted malts.

Draft. Pours a medium thick, poorly retained beige head with some lacing, over an apparently clear dark brown black (SRM 35) body.....nose is coffee, light chocolate, minimal hops, no esters.....taste is moderately sweet lactose type tones with coffee, cocoa, chocolate hints, finishing with a moderate burnt coffee bitterness and light hops......mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, with a clean light acid finish. The coffee adjunct is a bit too dominant for the malt and hop backbones. If coffee tasting beers are your thing it is wonderful, if not, well. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7

Sampled at the brewery. This is a great coffee porter. The coffee is clean and not peppery. Chocolate, creamy, slight caramel. We had to order two, my wife wouldn’t share.

Had this beer very recently on tap at Merchants in Lawrence, so its a bit of a surprise that this was a 2011 beer. Very nice, though. Not much head, but a deep, rich coffee character.

Tap at Meddlesome Moth, Dallas Tx, a thin coffee porter which has loads of coffee nose, minimal head, and surprisingly watery body, almost like there was too much coffee, then again no vegetals that I found which make it quite tasty.

Deep brown/black color with tan lacing and head. Fairly bold aroma of coffee and wood (tree bark). Big body, certainly for a porter, but not so big that stout aspects come through. Lots of coffee on the palate, with one pint being plenty for the evening.

Black with a dark tan head. Aroma is strong black coffee. Flavor is roasted coffee malt with a touch of sweetness. A tad bitter in the finish, but not unpleasantly so. Wife: 4.75

Tap at Rattle, pours blackish brown with one finger head. Nose of roasted coffe beans. Tastes of coffe grinds, cola, malt, and I’m getting chili peppers and bacon. Would almost guessed it was a smoked beer. Anyways tasty.
