Suttree (2701), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 8, 2006 Murky brown, with a thin but persistant beoge head. Very sweet smelling, with a big caramel note mixed withtouches of chocolate and honey. Smooth caramel and toffee and a smooth bitterness at the end. Surprisingly enjoyable. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Oct 2, 2006 amber pour underneath a tall tan well laced head. Huge sweet malty aroma carmels and brown sugar real light grass hops. Palate is thick and well coated. Flavor is highly sweet lots of carmels some nice citrus and hints of alcohol in the finish. Pretty good stuff. brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Oct 1, 2006 Dark fruit malt aroma, slight chocolate also, substanial head, can smell the alcohol, taste is malt some kind of wood, little hop in background, nice full body but really not complex enough to be rated higher JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Sep 14, 2006 Somewhat muddy umber color with a moderate beige/tan head. Heavy sheet of lace as it subsides. Caramel, toffee and toast mix with green hops, grapefruit, mildly solvent laden pine and resin. Ok, I have to get myself ready for a double ESB/Bitter, when do we get a double mild? Quite thick, but for all the sweetness it is in no way cloying. Smooth and quite soft throughout the swig. Mild toffee and caramel, followed by a burst of fruit, with plums, raisins and a light berry aside. Some balancing citric hops that also have a touch of dry wood to them. Hints of spice and alcohol in the finish and linger. Call it a double ESB, american strong, double amber, it still seems to translate to a average strong ale. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Sep 6, 2006 Poured a red amber color with nice head and great lacing. Aroma was of light fruits and malts. Flavor was of caramel malts and brown suger hops in the aftertaste. Solid beer.
eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Aug 16, 2006 Didn’t expect much going into this one, but it was thoroughly enjoyable, especially when combined mid-glass with some spicey salsa and tortilla chips. Pour was murky ruby-amber with a very nice head that lasted quite well and provided excellent lacing. The aroma was malty, lightly fruited (pears and / or even a strawberry type aroma) with almost a light salty or seawead/water scent lingering underneath. Flavor was caramel malty, light bread, brown sugar, somewhat sweet but not cloying, then of course finishing with an assertive but not overdone hop presence. Hops were a little spicey and grapefruity, and they came out even stronger with spicey food to accompany. Mouthfeel was full with plenty of unfilteredness going on. beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA Aug 14, 2006 (06.05.06) One pint, 9.36 oz green bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. 9% ABV. Poured hazy brown with small off-white head. Soft carbonation. Clean hoppy aroma. Medium-to-full bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and caramel/hoppy flavors. Some mouth sharpness. Hop bitterness starts in the middle. Finished with lingering hop bitterness. A rich, hoppy, and flavorful beer. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 9, 2006 Pours a ruddy brown with a reasonable, though diminishing white dense head with streaky lacing. The nose is enormous. Big sweet round malts (including hints of caramel and chocolate), juicy floral hops, and a touch of juicy fruit. Reminiscent of an american barleywine with some age on it. Smooth and mouthfilling on the palate with nice low carbonation and a little bit of alcohol warming. The flavor is a slight drop off from the aroma, more reminiscent of a small double IPA. Sweet round malts with floral hops and herbal carroty flavors. Definite creamy chocolate undertones. Alcohol is bigger for sure. The finish is a floral/alcohol/chocolate bitterness, but the sweetness lingers a bit too long making it less clean. I enjoyed this a lot at first and slight less as time went on.
