jhumphries69 (718), Tyrone, Georgia, USA May 18, 2008 Draft at <a href="http://www.5thearlmarket.com/">Fifth Earl Market in Decatur. Pours amber/copper with a thin offwhite head. The aroma is filled with vinous fruits, caramel and malt, and sticky green hops. There was a little darker malt character in the aroma, too - like a touch of chocolate. The flavor is strong and sweet - mostly caramel and dark malt with some breadiness. There are a good bit of fruity esters and a pungent, fruity hop bitterness at mid-palate. The finish is warming and bitter and lingers lengthily. The mouthfeel is thick and full but lightened with mild suds. There is a light sting at mid-tongue that fades before the finish. Overall, a nice strong ale that is quite similar to an American Barleywine.
thornecb (1737), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Oct 30, 2009 Pours deep mahogany into a trappist glass. Tan head recedes to skim surface. Sweet caramel malt aromas. Nutty and malty from front to back. Some mild dried pit fruit in the middle. Lasting English barleywine bitter finish. Tastes like an over-aged double bastard. DeadGirl (192), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Oct 27, 2009 Pours hazy amber from the 750ml. bottle: Sweet, malty aroma pairing with flavors of brown sugar, caramel malts, molasses, and alcohol (fairly hidden). Drinkability: Bold, sweet malty flavors dominate. Possibly should be restyled as a barley-wine? Rebuy: Eh.. #166 on 27102009, DG. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 15, 2009 Bottle from Frank Smith’s. Pours turnid brown with off-white head that was substantial. Nose was caramel, cacao, malty, brown sugar, wheaties. Tastes like liquid Wheaties dipped in caramel, but not as sweet as that, with some mid-palate nuts, brown sugar, and cacao. Pretty rich, complex, and very enjoyable. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA Sep 10, 2009 750ml bottle ’08 9/10/09 (Binny’s Naperville)-Pours a hazy amber with a small off white head. Aroma of sweetness, malt, and toffee. Taste of sweetness, toffee, dried fruits, and a little hops. I agree with the previous reviews that this full bodied brew is bordering if not a Barley Wine. Quite drinkable and hides the ABV very well. Nice job. kidmartinek (972), austin, Texas, USA Jul 25, 2009 7 something at grapevine< 12 something everywhere else. Pours dark brown, clear(see-through) like a lager. Molassess sugary sweet aroma. Strong sweet barely taste, and strong alcohol presence in the mouthfeel.Unfortunately< its rather easy to drink. Doesn’t exhibit very strong carbonation. It leaves a moderate lacing on the glass. Reminds me really of a barley wine. That’s what is mostly is anyway. tmoreau (527), Lombard, Illinois, USA Jul 12, 2009 Sample from Left Hand rep. at AleFest-Chicago when I disclosed a secret phrase. This "private stock" was from the 07 batch. It poured a fairly clear orange/amber, with some good off white head and clinging lace. Malt sweetness, nice alcohol, and bold flavor, bordering on if not into barley wine territory were present. Some bitterness and dryness finished a very good Strong...er Ale sampling. ChristianScheffel (4431), Odense, Denmark Jul 11, 2009 Cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma of toffee, milk chocolate and hops. Caramel and chocolate flavour, rather dry. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jun 23, 2009 From a 750ml bottle. Poured a dark copper with some haze and a yellowing khaki head. Nose of sweet pears and orange essence. There is also a little bit of raw bread dough. The taste is mostly raw bread dough with some grapefruit juice mixed in. There is a strange yeasty character that is bizarre. Almost like this one was bottled with the trub. Kind of nasty, I am also reminded of taking a bite of wet rotting wood. Fairly gross and yes, I am upset I spent so much money on it. After having some of the pricey Left Hand beers burn me, you would think I would learn.
