jhumphries69 (656), Tyrone, Georgia, USA May 18, 2008 Draft at <a href="http://www.5thearlmarket.com/">Fifth Earl Market in Decatur. Pours amber/copper with a thin offwhite head. The aroma is filled with vinous fruits, caramel and malt, and sticky green hops. There was a little darker malt character in the aroma, too - like a touch of chocolate. The flavor is strong and sweet - mostly caramel and dark malt with some breadiness. There are a good bit of fruity esters and a pungent, fruity hop bitterness at mid-palate. The finish is warming and bitter and lingers lengthily. The mouthfeel is thick and full but lightened with mild suds. There is a light sting at mid-tongue that fades before the finish. Overall, a nice strong ale that is quite similar to an American Barleywine.
heemer77 (4187), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jun 23, 2009 From a 750ml bottle. Poured a dark copper with some haze and a yellowing khaki head. Nose of sweet pears and orange essence. There is also a little bit of raw bread dough. The taste is mostly raw bread dough with some grapefruit juice mixed in. There is a strange yeasty character that is bizarre. Almost like this one was bottled with the trub. Kind of nasty, I am also reminded of taking a bite of wet rotting wood. Fairly gross and yes, I am upset I spent so much money on it. After having some of the pricey Left Hand beers burn me, you would think I would learn. BVery (314), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Jun 21, 2009 BOTTLE: from the Left Hand guy at Stub & Herb’s post-Indulge event in Minneapolis. Copper pour, Caramel, mild fruit, some malt, overall a very good beer. Maddog (174), Kettering, Ohio, USA Jun 13, 2009 Draft at the brewery. Big, toasty, sweet caramel malts with a small hop presence. Full bodied and big for sure. Fresh, complex and very flavorful. CanIHave4Beers (561), Des Moines, Iowa, USA May 31, 2009 This pours with a small head and has a nice orange hue. The aromas are of cherry apple some roasty malt and a good bit of alcohol. The flavor is very strong on caramel and alcohol with some cherry and a deep maltiness balanced by some muted hop spiciness. I’d like to try it again. shawnm213 (535), South Bend, Indiana, USA May 23, 2009 pours a clear copper. chainsaws don’t come to mind when i drink this. maybe more like a walk through a meadow. I’m surprised by the 8.3 percent abc- very well hidden. seems nice enough. screwball (762), Motala, Sweden May 19, 2009 Big 750 ml bottle. Tanx to Ulric in Gbg.
This is complex and made with love. The aroma brings alot. At first it´s very malty and fruity. Also some cola and rubber. Flavor is sweet malty, colamalt, rubber, fruits.
Palate is oily and strong. Big. Round. Pleasent. Hope I will drink this again... ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark May 15, 2009 Hazy deep amber colour with a small beige head. caramel, fruity and vanilla sweet aroma with notes of alcohol and hops. Sweet and light roasted flavor with some hoppy bitterness. Sweet, light dry finish. djd07 (606), Houston, Texas, USA May 15, 2009 Bottle as shown. Pours a dark cloudy amber with a medium frothy light tan head that leaves behind good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a rich caramel malt with raisin and citrus. Thick mouthfeel with a roasted malt taste with raisin, caramel, and a bitter hop finish. Hides the alcohol well, easy to drink, a very good American Strong Ale from Left Hand.
