2013 & 2010 Gold Medal Winner at the Great American Beer Festival in the Foreign Stout category.

That time of year when the day seems to fade away. Drifting further into the darkness with each passing day. Volume 1 - Foreign Stout - Pours black with licorice, espresso bean, molasses, and black cardamom notes that give way to a feeling of self loathing, burnt opportunities and smoked relationships.

This beer is most definatly not retired. On tap at the dutch pours a jet black with nice foamy head. Full body with nice roast and chocolate. Well balanced with hints of flower. Yum.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Huge fruity chocolate aroma. This is a rich chocolaty beer. There is a warming alcohol that is well hidden. Solid brew.

This ale poured a black colour with a quickly dissipating, tan head. Scents include cocoa, coffee, milk? First swig was a little flat with flavours of roasted malt, a little smoke and glue? Finish was nice and roasty with smokey coffee flavours lingering.

Bottle. Pours deep, dark brown with tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, roast, faint dark fruit notes, and faint toffee. Flavor is rich chocolate throughout with some faint sweetness, medium bitterness, and a dry, roasted finish. Medium body.

Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours as black as stout with a small but well retained head and some decent lacing on the glass.

The aroma is really chocolaty, medium sweet, with a distinct odd spice note which the commercial description convinces me is cardamom. Itís lightly woody with some mild coffee character. Pretty inviting honestly.

The flavor is honestly pretty bitter and doesnít carry itís self with the same richness as the aroma. Of course itís got espresso, cocoa, plenty of roast, light smoke and licorice. Itís boozy enough for sure & I donít mind the bitterness of it all, but something about it is just off balance a little. But yeah, way to hit a bunch of cool flavor notes and pull off this style which is weird and sort of intangible but also identifiable.
