Imagine Robert DeNiro sitting in your darkened parlour near the fire in his Louis Cyphre persona smoking a Tuscan cigar. This may be the beer with which to save (or lose) your soul. Dried fruit flavors entwined with smoky pepper and licorice embossed on roasty malt sweetness open on your tongue as the slow warmth of chilis creep up on your tongue and throat, finishing in an herbal smoke ring flourish.

Tasted 10/17/11. 12oz bottle. Pours rather opaque brown with a slight ruby highlight around the edges. Webbed ring of khaki head. Aromas of smoked malts, earthy and spicy. Cocoa dust and subtle dark berries. Nicely full bodied with the base malt comprising most of the flavor component. The pepper is trace, at least while still nicely chilled, and adds to the palate but doesn’t overwhelm. Sweet candy roasted malts last the duration of the sip. Subtle smokey notes creep in along with a graham cracker flavor. A smooth and tasty sipper with just enough extra flavor to set it apart. The pepper, spice and smoke notes all contribute to the end result and help round out the palate flow. Well done!

FROM NOTES: June 29, ’12 A: Definite pepper aroma mixed with chocolate. A: Pours a dark almost black color with a light tan head that disappears quickly with no lacing. T: Nice chocolate flavor in the front finishing with a roasted peppery aftertaste. Spice is subtle. P: Little carbonation that rolls nicely on the palate. O: I’m usually not a fan of spicy beers, but this one is nice and subtle with the pepper notes on the finish for the most part.

Tap at Dexters. Opaque brown-black. Big, creamy beige head. Roasty chocolate and black pepper aroma. Smooth, milk chocolate tones dominate. Pretty good, rather mellow pepper tones. Interesting, decent Porter.
