That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

Tap. Heavy malt aromas of toasted, dark chocolate and dark bread, light to moderate hops and yeast notes of resin and earth, with hints of wood and black pepper. Head is large, creamy, light tan with good lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is almost black. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium, slick, with a lively carbonation and a dry finish. Very well done Black IPA, mellower than most others.

12 oz bottle pours a dark cola brown, and opaque black when settled underneath a big beige head with only a little lacing. Aroma is full of roasted malts with some citrus and floral hops. Taste is slightly bitter with some nuts in the finish. Medium body, and easily drinkable without too much carbonation. I expect black IPAs to be hoppier than this, but this one was quite enjoyable anyway, and a bit different.

Draft. Pours a dark black with minimal head. Aroma of roasty chocolate with some earthy pine and citrus. Taste is about the same. Light bitter. Not a bad beer really, but not super special. A little thin for my taste.

12 oz bottle, Whole Foods Columbus. Yup, it’s a black beer... Medium beige head dissipates into medium ring; light lacing. Aroma dark coffee, roast, citrus, caramel, vanilla. Flavor is a total mess... Coffee and roast and... floral hops?! Medium body, heavier carbonation verging on frothy. Overly bitter. I can appreciate the chocolate-orange aroma but the hops are too heavy in the flavor to capture that aroma. Not my thing.
