That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

Tap. Pours dark brown with thon, fizzy light beige head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is toasted and caramel malts, plums, figs, earthy and floral hops, and light dough. Flavor is ash, earthy hops (light bitterness), chocolate, roast malt, and some dark fruit esters. Medium body and low carbonation.

12-oz. Pours black with a sudsy thin dark tan head. Not much lace. Big roasty nose, ashy, showing campfire. Watery medium body, a little undercarbonated. Roasty, ashy, with beef jerky on the mid palate. Hop presence seems dialed way, way back. This really needs some oily acidic hop cone juiciness to play off all these heavy astringent malts. Finish is super acetic.

THin palate, chocoaltey beer, no sign of hops anywhere close to this one. Draft version.

Pours black with one inch light brown head. It had a rich aroma of dark roasted malts and mocha. The taste was similar with primarily malty notes and a nice lingering hop bitterness.

Deep beautiful black pour, nice black ale deserving of the name. The most interesting thing was the amaro aftertaste - it sticks to your tongue, and I loved it. Very bitter herbaceousness, quite interesting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown pour, light tan head. Roasty, bitter hops, slightly metallic, and a bit of chocolate. Okay, not the best black IPA, but decent.

1/2/13. 12oz bottle from Grassroots Natural Market. Deep dark brown pour with a nice khaki head that sticks and laces quite a bit. Citrus and a hint of tropical/bubblegum in the aroma balanced well by roasted malts. Lightly sweet malty entry with chocolate and coffee, plenty of hop bitterness, citrus, ane lingering dry, roasted black malts. Tasty!

Has a very mild aroma, yet pleasant. Beautiful silky black with with a tan head. A nice dark chocolate maltiness in flavor. Not overbearing at all. Quite smooth. Mild aftertaste. Would buy again.
