That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

Draft. Pours a dark black with minimal head. Aroma of roasty chocolate with some earthy pine and citrus. Taste is about the same. Light bitter. Not a bad beer really, but not super special. A little thin for my taste.

12 oz bottle, Whole Foods Columbus. Yup, it’s a black beer... Medium beige head dissipates into medium ring; light lacing. Aroma dark coffee, roast, citrus, caramel, vanilla. Flavor is a total mess... Coffee and roast and... floral hops?! Medium body, heavier carbonation verging on frothy. Overly bitter. I can appreciate the chocolate-orange aroma but the hops are too heavy in the flavor to capture that aroma. Not my thing.

Bottle. Coffee/roasted barley malt and citrus peel aroma. Dark brown with moderate brown head. Sweet mocha malt and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Pretty good.

On tap at Euclid Hall. Pour is pitch black with a big frothy brown head and great lacing. Pine, cocoa, graham crackers, grass, light vanilla, and chocolate in the aroma. Taste is roast, cocoa, dark fruits, nutmeg, grass, mint, pine, leather, and espresso with a medium bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Decent black IPA.

Bottle. I love the aroma of this beer. Floral, citrus, brunt toast. Taste is not so good, but really good after taste after you get past the bitterness. Deep dark color. Nice brown head.

Tap at Trinity. Pours clear black with a medium, creamy light tan head, short retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt with pine, earthy, and citrus hops and prune notes. Flavor is dark malt dominant with medium hops and bitterness, dark fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

12-oz. Pours black with a sudsy thin dark tan head. Not much lace. Big roasty nose, ashy, showing campfire. Watery medium body, a little undercarbonated. Roasty, ashy, with beef jerky on the mid palate. Hop presence seems dialed way, way back. This really needs some oily acidic hop cone juiciness to play off all these heavy astringent malts. Finish is super acetic.
