That time of year when the light fades away. Brewed for the darkness, Fade to Black speaks in volumes. Welcome to Volume 4, the Beer pours pitch black with an off white head. Citrus (bergamot) and roast dominates the nose. Slight sweet malt gets pushed back by initial citrusy hops followed by powerful Italian Amaro, gentian and hop bitterness. Finishing with a pleasant duality of dry roasted malts and hop bitterness.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2012 Odd brew... Cant place the aroma, its a bit roasty with some citrus. Flavor is almost like two beers in one; roasty porter like upfront and minty citrus aftertaste. Overall, complex but more like a black pale ale than a black ipa. Not bad... Thanks to BarZigKin for sharing!

Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a loose frothy cap of cream colored suds.

Aroma: Grapefruit and pine resiny hops. Not much roast at all. Itís there, but very faint.

Taste: A nice hop profile of bitterness and citrus followed by a quick punch of spicy chocolate roast. Both the roast and hop bouquet fall off quick, leaving no lingering aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, a little juicy with moderate carbonation.

Overall: A very nice hoppy ale. Left Hand didnít call it a Black IPA, but of all the ones Iíve tried, this, in my mind, would be a black IPA. Lots of hops, mild roast.

12 ounce bottle, bottled on 11/07/12. Served in a goblet (like the label on the bottle says), the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch tan head. Head retention is good, and thereís a lot of lacing too. The brew smells like roasted malt, pine and citrusy hops, burnt/charred malt and a bit of coffee. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but thereís the addition of some bittersweet chocolate. Nice balance between the hoppy and malty flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís creamy and smooth, with a good amount of carbonation. I think itís a good overall brew, definitely worth a try at $9.99 a 6-pack.

Bottle. Black body with a big, fizzy off-white head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malt, husky grain, grass, resin, burnt grain. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Slightly husky, a little too resinous, but not as harsh as other black IPAs Iíve had, likely due to the sweetness of this beer.

Pours black with tan head. Aroma of dark roasted grain with subtle hints of pine. Flavor is much the same with a balanced malt back bone and bitter. Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation. Overall, well, just another black IPA.

Decent beer, always love left hands take on the body of their beers. Very good mouth feel here. Half inch bubbly head with minimal retention. Taste is good, malty with a little hop and little bite. Aftertaste is very little coffee to me.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2013 Malt, pine and citrus aroma. Very dark black with tan head. Tastes better than it smells. Herbal, floral, hoppy on the finish with a coffee type bitterness that lingers on the finish.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a thick well retained, light beige head, with some lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 35) body.....nose is citrus, pine, resin, hints of coffee......taste is coffee, citrus, pine, light chocolate, leading to a moderate pine/resin bitter finish.....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. The bergamot adds a very different aroma, and has some effects on the flavors. This is a nicely balanced Black IPA, which, because of the ingredients, is a bit off the usual beaten path. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7
