3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle from Samís, Durham. Yet another try at this sometimes off-putting and sometimes enjoyable style. This vigorous black ale is certainly one of those which, citrusy nose and flavors notwithstanding, dials into the dark, chocolatey parts of its profile fairly consistently. Earthy notes, some char, and rich fruitbread stuff lingers in along with the dry and fruity elements that tend to be secondary. Decent stuff but nothing Iíd go back to, unlike some previous Fade to Blacks.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nose was pretty big for me. Citrus and roast. Taste had chocolate , roast malt, coffee and some licorice. Finish was somewhat bitter and not the best. Lingers a little to long.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a nice 1 cm brown head that lingers a bit. Leaves nice lacing too. Aroma is faint, just getting some light roast and citrus. Taste is pretty solid but a bit boring. Just some light roast and citrus like the aroma. Nice creamy finish with a pretty big bitterness, light roasted coffee taste lingers. Medium body, creamy and slightly oily mouthfeel. Overall, itís solid but needs more hops to help the aroma and taste complexity. Especially if you want to call this a Black IPA.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, citrus, and roasted coffee. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a one finger tan head that quickly fades to a thin ring outlined by a soapy ring. There is some thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate and a hint of black licorice. The finish consists of cocoa, roasted coffee, and light citrus, and pine. Itís medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, this doesnít seem hoppy enough to be considered a Black IPA.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
Surprisingly interesting. Aroma is a little weak with toasty malt notes and slight fruitiness. Taste is a little bitter, slightly fruity, smooth, and nutty. Raisin notes, maybe? Finish is smooth and decently dry, nice.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a lasting and fine lacing beige bubbly head. Aroma is berries, citrus hops, roasted malt, coffee, licorice, chocolate, bergamot, pine, floral note. Taste is medium sweet and bitter. Body is medium+, texture is light creamy, carbonation is medium. Finish is somewhat short except for a lingering herbal bitterness. Very fine aroma and great balance between malt and hops.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from HÝkeren. Dark brown close to black with a good lasting and lacing medium sized beige head. Aroma is beef jerky, chocolate, bubblegum, light dark roasted malt as it warms up. The bergamot really shows after the first sip. Taste is medium sweet and medium+ bitter. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Really dry grapefruity bitter finish. This works pretty well.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz. bottle. Darkly roasted, earthy aroma, some mild, sweetened coffee, along with background notes of tree bark, dried, leafy herbs, faint citrus and tinges of bakerís chocolate and cellar must. Solid ebony in color with a thick, pillowy, lasting khaki head and some very fine, sparse lacing. Flavor profile is full of dark, roasty, gently sweet malts and strong earthiness, accented with dark chocolate, herbal, leafy, almost floral hops, and a moderate amount of bitterness that first appears towards the finish, blended with suggestions of pine and loam. Extremely fine effervescence on the palate, creamy and smooth, drying out to a large extent, and with a medium-full body. I had to kind of scoff at the "new style" appropriate by Left Hand as "Rocky Mountain Black Ale", which I take to either be a dig towards or a takeoff of Cascadian Dark Ale. Sure enough, itís just listed as a Black IPA here. Iím not entirely sure thatís accurate, but itís pretty close. Then again, so is Robust Porter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle. Pours very dark brown with red hues. Aroma of caramel, dust, hay. Flavor is raisin, peat, pine, molasses, earth. A little too earthy/dirt for my taste.
