4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 beermatrix (1497) - Twin Cities, USA - DEC 20, 2007
The Goose pours out a murked greyish yellow and sits and stirs in the glass much like muddied water. Medium capping of lightish yellowed/off-white foam sits briefly before settling to a mere whisp of a skim and a few bubbles at the edges. Minimal lacing in some spots and small strings.
Aroma is all about the smoked meats baby. This goose is cooked, or smoked as it were. Big waft of smoked salmon creeps out even as its poured. Its big, bold, and loud as a goose. Hard to get much else, but its complexity of smoked stuff and strength is quite crazy.
Taste is more of the same, lots of smokey flavors over what once was a lighter doppelbock of sorts. Again, mostly smoked flavors of meats, wood, and leather make the palate soak and steam with raw might. Some sweetness backs it up, but the smoke is all over the place and quite supreme.
Feel is visciously full and robust with long smokey length that reaches beyond the sky in which it flies.
This is a great smoked beer, it has tons of smoke, perhaps too much for some; but I liked it. Just couldn’t drink it as easily as I’d like. This smoked Goose has some bite to its honk! This would be a great dinner beer with cheese apps and/or heavy crackers.

2007 vintage, expensive bottle. When I bought it I didn’t feel I was buying a doppelbock.
It pours a deep brownish plum with a fizzy off-white head that produces a bit of lacing.
The smell is smoky with a bit of a floral bouquet. There is also some cocoa and malt sweetness.
The flavor is sweeter than expected. It has a nuttiness to it that goes pretty nice with the campfire smoke flavor.
It is a nice smoked doppelbock, a bit sweet and alcoholic, but nice. Not the best one I have had but it is solid. Probably not worth the price tag however.

Bottle. 2005. Poured a clear ruddy dark orange color. The head was three fingers high and off white with good retention and decent lacing. Big malty aroma with molasses, caramel, and brown sugar elements. There was also some date and raisin. Medium bodied and sweet. Moderate carbonation with toffee, caramel, and date flavors. Nice. Not as overwhelming in the alcohol or malt departments as the Samichlaus I had last night.

A deep copper/red pour with a foamy head and lace. Nose of some dried fruit. A very rich sweetness, full malt, with a very light hops bitter. Palate is full and creamy carbonation is excellent. Very solid offering with a good abv warmth and lingering flavor that is pleasant for minutes after drinking. Hints of molasses as it warms

750ml bottle 2005 vintage, a bottle from the cellar that looked worth cracking this evening. Drank at cellar temp, shared with my girlfriend while dinner is in the process of cooking. Pours reddish with a tan ring. Nose is liquid smoke, and some old tired spices. Taste is sweet, and rich and somewhat smokey. Overall a bit light and overall underwhelming.

750mL bottle, 2005 vintage. Poured medium amber with a short-lived cap of tan head (looks very good when agitated). The aroma was sweet and aged with darker fruits and rich caramel present.. light earthy accents.. warm overall and a tad muddled. The flavor had primarily aged caramel at the core with some dark fruity bitterness, spicy notes, and oxidation present.. finished spicy and warm, picking up some brown sugar and herbal bitterness. Medium-bodied with low carbonation on the palate some nice spiciness, but overall quite muddled and slick on the palate.. didn’t appear to age very gracefully.
