This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2008 From the draught it poured a nice black color with a thin tan head. The aroma is of big roasted and dark malts with a hint fo chocolate in there. The taste was much the same with a lot of creamy chocolate and some nuts coming through with the roasted malts. It had a very nice thick creamy mouthfeel that was real easy to drink with a slight bitterness at the end. The creamy chocolate flavor was left behind in the aftertaste. Really good flavor and a solid milk stout.

Dark with a thick off white foam. Lovely dark chocolate, malt and cereal aroma. Sweet chocolaty malt and coffee taste, latte at that. Slightly thin on the palate though, must be skimmed milk.

Pours black, with a thick, foamy, well-retained light brown head. Pretty big roasty aroma, dark malts, cream, and mild chocolate notes are detectable. Very creamy mouthfeel, alot of roasted malts, nuts, creamy chocolate, with very mild bitterness showing up in the finish. Leaves a nice little chocolatey flavor in the aftertaste. Solid milk stout. Nice representation.

Bottle. Sweet and creamy smooth. A terrific stout. especially for a style that I rarely have the privilege to enjoy.

Pours big and black with a huge off white head. Aroma is cocoa and coffee beans. Taste like chocolate milk with a hint of coffee bitterness. Aftertaste is nice and clean, a cool change from over hoppy ales.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2008 Bottle. Pours black as oil, thick caramel-colored head. Aroma is milky and of coffee. Muted barley. Flavor is surprisingly smoky, with some milk chocolate. Watery finish. Pretty good.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2009 Bottled 355ml. It pours a black beer with a beige head. The aroma is of burnt tyres, roasted malt, dark chocolate and milk. A smoky touch in the nose too... Hints of seawater and candy. The taste is of dark chocolate, milk and candy sugar. Some eucalyptus and cress? Quite smoky. Some hints of hazelnuts. This stout is rather sweet. Medium bodied. The finish is very pleasant with hints of coffee and milk. A wonderful beer. Rerate: I was surprised how evident the lactic components where in the nose - usually a characteristic that only shows up in the taste. Hints of soy sauce. Extremely interesting. Sampled at a temperature that was probably slightly too high. Fantastic finish. In any case a great beer. I am staying at the score of 4.2. I am glad I can get this beer very easily. Second rerate: A great beer. Extremely pleasant with hints of herbs (sage, basil etc.) accompanied by a lot of coffee.

Deep, dark black pour. Fluffy light tan head with decent retention. The foam eventually settles to a thin rim, with spotted lacing dotting the glass in its wake. The aroma shows big roasted barley, with dry coffee beans and a bit of cane sugar. The flavor is basic, though well executed. I got lots of roasted grains, with ample amounts of heavy cream, coffee, light soy sauce, and some turbinado. The body is medium-full and very smooth, with a creamy, slightly sticky texture. Not complex, but well executed and incredibly easy to drink. I like it!

this stout was a bit too average... the aroma was wonderful coffee but the taste did not live up
