This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Bottle. Black pour with an off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, some coffee, and some chocolate. Flavor of some light fruits, coffee, chocolate, and roaste4d malt...perhaps a tinge of hazlenut. Light body for a stout, though this seems the norm for this brewer...nice carbonation though and finishes clean.

Black colored, medium sized beige head. Strong roasted aroma with coffee and sweetness, even some smoky tones there. Medium bodied. Flavor is also dominated by sweet roastiness and coffee, also this mild smoke there. Good stout, maybe slightly too sweet. Aftertaste lasts with creamy palate.

Bottled. Ruby-black color with small head. Mellow and sweet aroma with firm maltiness, coffee and chocolade. Sweet flavor with chocolade, coffee, some fruitiness and mild bitterness. Creamy and soft palate. A bit too sweet but still very pleasant.

12 oz bottle thanks to Dave. Pours a near black with short lived off white foam. Aroma of dark bread and cheese. Taste is malty with very little hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. My first try of this style.

Perfect beer. Chewy like a raisinette. The sweetness is evident but not overly so. Cloying but very repectful of company such as soft cheese. Aged chedar did not go well as the tangle ended up in a kind of rotten egg thing.

Dark, dark brown with a tan head. Sweet aroma of cocoa and cream, almost like a hot chocolate. Smooth, sweet taste as well, with some roasted malts and chocolate milk. Very close to a watery milkshake. Enjoyable beer.

Bottle. Deep, dark brownish black color with black-and-tan like head. Evidence of chocolate milk, coffee grounds, and whipped cream like scent. Taste follows suit but adds an interesting roasted nut aftertaste. Solid and pleasurable.

On draught at McCray’s 6th St. Tavern in ATL. Pours a deep brown, opaque in glass, with low crown and medium retention with virtually little lacing. Aroma is full of roasty and toasty notes, malty sweetness, caramel, toffee, chocolate, and a bit of coffee. Flavour is very sweet, full of malt and a little bit of coffee and chocolate. The finish is very smooth with no hop bite. Palate is very medium and I would have liked it to be a bit creamier, as the name implies. Overall a pretty decent beer and I don’t mind sipping on this all morning long while watching a football match on TV.
