This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Black, with a thing cream head. Rich chocolate notes. Medium mouthfeel, tasting some coffee, chocolate, and some sort of fruit. Well balanced and quite delectable.

12 oz. bottle pours a dark cola color with a very thin mocha-colored head. The aroma is very slight, hinting at chocolate. The taste starts off with just a half-second of hop kick that fades rapidly into a very earthy, smokey and chocolate-driven finish. Not much bitterness at all. The palate is very creamy despite the suprisingly active carbonation.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2007 Pours very dark brown with nice thick whitish/brown head. Sweet aroma of mocha caramel malts. Flavor is very well-rounded nice semi-sweetness up front with a hint of bitterness in the finish. A little light bodiied for a stout, but it does go down nicely. Overall, very enjoyable.

Bottle, from Frugal McDoogals Beer Warehouse, Nash-TN. Dark pour, nice brown head that sticks around for most of the beer. (I guess that depends on how quickly you’re drinking, though!) Sweet aroma, flavor of a jamocha milkshake almost....finishes VERY smooth. Very light as far as a Stout is concerned. Wow, I was really impressed with this one-right up my alley!

(Bottled on 3/1/06, from Julio’s Liquors (MA)) Pours dark cola brown with about 2" of rocky tan head that recedes to about 1/4". Aroma of a chocolate milkshake with coffee. Mouthfeel very smooth, almost silky. Webby rings of lacing. Flavor is just about like aroma - chocolate shake and coffee, lightly sweet. Really nice except I didn’t like the bit of grassiness in the finish. Lightly bitter.

Initially very roasted. Strong sense of burnt coffee and dark chocolate. Milkiness comes later in a blend of spices and caramel. aftertaste lingers with a mild malt flavor. Very enjoyable.

(Tap) Pours black with small head. Creamy and rich. Sweet, but by no means cloying. Roasted coffee notes. This one had a very malty and smooth aftertaste. Very enjoyable.

Got a 6 pack of this and it was a good choice. Nutty, mostly coffee aroma. Pleasant roast flavor and aftertaste. You will catch a bit of sweetness to balance this beer out.

12oz bottle pours a brownish black with a tan fizzy head. chocolate and roastedness fill the nose with a little nutty undertone. The mouthfeel is medium with roasted chocolate flavors and a hint of milk creaminess that balances out the bitterness and roast. As the beer slides down your throat, you’re left with a roasted flavor thats like a mouth full of raw unground coffee beans. A really enjoable brew.

Bottle. Aroma of dark, roast chocolate, nuts, milk/milk chocolate, coffee. Black wih a thick and lacing foamy brown head that reminded me of the mattresses I’d seen the day before. Taste is all about roast and chocolate, the milk (chocolate milk) notes arrive fashionably late and stay until long after the party has ended. Sweet and malty but not cloying. Light spiciness underneath the coffee. Medium-thin mouthfeel with a light underlying roasty/yeasty grit, but on the whole, very creamy and smooth. Balanced, with great interplay between the roast and milk. Dries toward the finish and into the long aftertaste. Straightforward and rather enjoyable - I’m quite a fan of this one.
