This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2008 I don’t like dark beers, but this has a GREAT taste. Very dark color, very creamy taste, but not heavy. Kind of a coffee taste to it

12 oz bottle...deep mud color almost black w/ a tan head. Nose reminded me of mildly roasted coffee beans, and some slight chocolate sweetness. Taste was similar only I’d say more of a dark chocolate bittness on the palate. Very creamy tasting w/o feeling thick or heavy. This is a very good stout!

Pours extremely dark, but not quite opaque. Nose is of smoky roasted beans. Kind of dusty on there as well. I remember trying this back when I lived in New Mexico and getting the same characteristics. Flavor is extremely thick with malts. Minimal, but noticeable smoke/roasted flavors. Slight milky and noticeable sweetness. Okay, more than a slight sweet side to it. Feel is just right I think. Thick on liquid and a good carbonation. This is just how I remembered it being. Thick with a unique character and easily drinkable. Worth going for.

Really nice stout. A rich roastiness that almost explodes. Coffee and dark chocolate and sweet malt flavors with a tinge of sourness in the finish. Nicely balanced and quite drinkable. Think I’ll open another.

General66 shared a bottle of this; thanks! Poured almost black with a dark brown edge. Aroma of brown sugar, coffee, and some bitter chocolate. Chocolate and roasted malt flavor. Mouthfeel was medium-light. Not as sweet as other sweet stouts, but definitely unique and worth a try.

355ml bottle purchased at Systembolaget. Very dark pour with ruby highlights. Thin, tan head. Shades of smooth cocoa in aroma, while the taste is more dominated by roasted grain, chocolate along with a lactose touch. Creamy and soft palate. Nice as a nightcap (enjoyed on a Saturday night at Scandic Hotel, Linköping 27.01.2008).

12 ounce bottle shared with Illini08. Pours a dark brown color with a half finger width light brown head. At first, this beer smelled like milk but as it warmed I sensed some chocolate and coffee hints. The taste was about the same as the smell. Tasted like milk with a lingering chocolate and coffee aftertaste. Had the mouthfeel of milk. I did not know what to expect from this one, but I came away pleasantly surprised.

Bottle. Dark brown, almost black, with a thin light brown head. Potent roasted coffee aroma as well as chocolate and some sweetness. Flavours are sweet, but at the same time with good roast. Well-balanced. and delicious. Favorate stout

HOLY COW this beer is good. The taste of milk is there from the beginning and becomes more apparent as you let it sit on the palate. Tastes of coffee are also in the mix. Very good beer. Left hand really hit this one off the farm (get it?)
