COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Lots of chocolate and coffee in the nose. Sweet, coffee, nutty and milkchocolate in the taste. Nice thick mouthfeel and a good fruity long finish. Very nice!

Bottle from BierKoning. Dark licorice colour. Chocolate, hazelnut, coffee and malt flavour. Very smooth, like butter. Mouthtexture comparable to mudpie. Extra points for the cow on the label.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2008 This rating is for the Left Hand milk stout on a nitrogen tap at the Left Hand brewery tasting room in Longmont, CO. The appearance is beautiful with a thick, creamy head that lasts until one reaches the bottom of the glass. The mouth-feel is liquid velvet- full and thick It drinks like a beer milk shake. Unlike anything else that I have tasted. I would like to have just a little bit more hoppiness, but this might take away from the incredibly smooth-as-silk texture. A truly first-rate sweet stout and well worth the drive to Longmont. Of course, a stop at the Left Hand tasting room is a must whenever you are within 100 miles of Longmont. The folks at Left Hand are the best.

Bottle. Pours a black color with a small fast disappearing tan head. Roasted malty licorice aroma with some hints of chocolate. Sweetish malty milk chocolate flavor with hints of licorice and coffe. Slightly roasted malty finish with some hints of chocolate in the aftertaste.

Nose is of lactose and sweet sweat. Pours a nice ruby brown and sits in glass with little head or legs. Sweet body with semi sweet crisp patent finish. A nice surprise at the store from Left hand.

Bottle. A very deep red color makes this beer look black with a fine brown head to cap it off. Aroma is heavy roasted coffee malt and milk chocolate, pretty strong and almost crosses the line into the unforgivable salted meat aroma. Almost. Flavor is sweet mollasses on the tongue originally, moves on to hazelnut coffee and then leaves a sweet acidic and nutty touch. Along with a good mouthfeel makes this sweet stout really top notch.

Pours a very dark brown with hints of garnet and a fairly small, tan, fizzy-pillowy head with moderate longevity and minimal, but nice, lace. Nose is milk chocolate, oatmeal, minor coffee notes, and hints of hazlenut. Flavor is milk chocolate, dark caramels, moderately low bitterness due mostly to the coffee hints, and a touch of hazlenut still. Palate is moderately light, lively, but quite silky. Fnishes short and mostly sweet with dark caramels and a lingering hazlenut note. Nice, solid, drinkable sweet stout from a local brewery. The beer thrives off of its texture and nice lactic notes creating a smooth, easy drinking stout.

Black pour. Halo of lace is left behind after the tan head quickly fades. Coffee & roasted malt on the nose, also hints of sweetness. Even, full mouthfeel. Subtle coffee/chocolate flavor. Slightly sweet finish with a bit of bitterness. Very smooth and easy drinking.

Dark stout, 2 fingers tan head. smelled of malt and raisins. This was no where near as thick as i had expected (and hoped for) Taste is thin taste of malt, toasted choco, and carmel, doesn’t taste as complex as i had thought either. good stout just expected more. probably wouldn’t buy again.
