This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800ís. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefitsÖsorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year Ďround stout.

Poured to a drak brown with hints of red, thin tan head and some lacing. Aroma was strongly malt, chocolate and toffee, with coffee smell becoming more evident at mid-glass. Flavor pretty much follwed these same lines, and the finish was primarily the same as I get after finishing my morning coffee.

A pretty run of the mill stout. Pours black with a nutty coffee type flavor. A bit light on the alc% but I guess overall not too bad.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2007 Black body. Sweet taste at first that fades to more of a coffee taste. Good but for a stout I expect a bit more.

Iíve had this beer a million times, but for some reason Iím just now getting around to rating it. From draught: pours red-black with small beige head. The aroma is roasty and sweet with some molasses. The flavor is mildly roasty with a molasses-like sweetness, nuttiness, a little bit of baking chocolate, subtle hops toward the finish, and a sweet slightly woody aftertaste. Something seems to be lacking in the middle, though Iím not sure what, but it doesnít detract too much from the overall quality.

12 oz bottle. Pours an opaque brown/black with a brown head. Aroma has chocolate and coffee. Pretty sweet flavor and a smooth mouth feel.

Pours a deep near-opaque brownish black with a thin tan head. Very stout-like aroma of roasted malt, black coffee, bittersweet chocolate and nuts that also carries over into the flavor. A bit more bitter than I expected for a sweet stout; nothing pronounced about the milk sugar ... maybe a slight mellowing of the palate and the flavors. Decent mouthfeel, good lacing. Not bad.

Top notch aromas of chocolate and hazelnut. Great lacing from the dark and brown stout. Add coffee on the flavor and a malty sweet finish. A fairly light sweet stout on the palate, but still long on the finish. Not the finest in the style, but a nutty, good effort. Low alcohol, which is good, since I doubt the light textures could mask it.

Deep translucent brown with a big frothy head. Strong roasting is present in the aroma. This is definatly sweet, with a creamy smooth body, and clean finish. This is a very good beer.

Pours nearly opaque brown/black. Nice nose of chocolate and dark coffee. The beer is sweetish but not over the top and certainly has enough austerity in the malt to balance out the milk sugars. That being said, this stout is unquestionably true to its name with overwhelming notes of chocolate icecream and sunday syrup. The finish is a bit sticky but ultimately the slightly coarse carbonation shortens its stay.
