This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800ís. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefitsÖsorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year Ďround stout.

Bottle: dark black with a thin tan head, chocolate, hoppy, coffee aroma, strong coffee flavor and malty, creamy moutfeel with a note of hops in the finish. Pretty nice sweet stout.

Aroma: a scent of delicious chocolate milk & hops enters my nose as the beer plunges into the glass. Indeed a nice fragrance. Very american, vague notes of coffee but mainly chocolate. A slightly sourish tone in the background as well.
Appearance: reddish brown towards black. Clear but near opaque. Dirty-linen-coloured head leaves thick floaty lacing. Itís beautiful.
Flavour: sweet, fudgelike, milky with nutty malts & malt bitterness. Very mild & appetizing. Especially good for being so mild. Slightly sourish cocoa- and hop-aftertaste. Roasted.
Palate: very soft & fluffy. Good carbonation. Light & smooth.

Pours a dark, black-ruby body with a tan, creamy head that hangs around for a while before digressing to a thin rim. The smell is strong coffee, chocolate, and a touch of oak. The flavor is a nice array of coffee, chocolate malt, and sweet milk sugar. The mouthfeel is the creamiest Iíve had in stout--like whole milk going down. Very little bittering leaves the sweetness to ring out finishing soft and sweet.

Draft Mag gave this a high rating. Thought Iíd try. Not really creamy and not as sweet as expected. Lasting roast finish on the tongue. Average.

Fresh bottle, finally, after the nightmare 2 year old bottle I had a while back. Good to see this brewery back in Tampa. Pours a very dark brown to black body with a creamy, 2 finger sized mocha colored head. Very nice lasting power, takes a while to calm down and finally leaves a ring of foam. That looks much better! Sheets of lacing cascade down the side of the glass. Very nice nose on this one - coffee or espresso beans, milk and dark chocolate, sweet cream, dark roasted malts and a touch of fruit sweetness. Creamy lactose sweetness on the fore, medium astringency. Heavy doses of cream, chocolate and coffee round out the flavor profile. Creamy palate, medium bodied with a sweet, sticky mouthfeel. Finish is medium length, roasty and then fades into a wonderful sweetness. Great stuff, very unique, this will be a fridge staple of mine!

Beautiful black pour with an off-white head, which lasted longer than usual for this style. Incredibly strong coffee notes with a subtle hint of chocolate as well. Creamy mouthfeel with strong coffee flavor. Itís funny - I donít drink coffee and never find myself wanting to hit the local Starbucks, but I love the cream stout style. This is a great beer.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2007 Poured an attractive dark color with off-white head that hung around for a while. Aroma was of coffee and chocolate. Flavor was also of chocolate, coffee and maybe a bit of caramel. Mouthfeel was nice. Drinkability is good on this one. Maybe not the most complex, but very enjoyable.

Too sweet, but otherwise damn good. A fine example of the style.... the only other admirable one that Iíve had was from Japanís Hitachino. Once agoin quite good...just wish it was not so fucking sweet.
