This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2008 bottle. Pours dark brown, opaque with a thin tan head. Pleasent aroma has notes of chocolate and roasted malt. I can already detect some sweetness. The flavor was nice if somewhat muted. There were notes of chocolate, coffee, some sweetness, and some dark fruit. The finish is pleasently mild and only slightly bitter. The mouth feel is medium to light and it is fairly smooth but also pretty bland. This was a nice sweet stout but it was not as interesting as I had hoped. Just because it is sweet doesn’t mean that all of the flavors and aromas have to be dialed down. Slightly above average.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2015 2. rerate, 355 ml bottle, as Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.0%. Black colour, low and creamy beige head. Dryish roasty aroma, notes of coffee, hints of woodwork, cocoa and liquorice. Low carbonation. Medium dry and very roasty flavour with a little lactose sweetness present, notes of strong coffee, a little dark chocolate and liquorice. Should not be drunk ice cold, cellar temperature is better. 1. rerate, 12 fl. oz. bottle, bought at the GBBF 2008 for takeaway (forgot that I had rated it previously). ABV was said to be 5.0%. Dark brown colour, nearly black, nice and lasting tan head. Notes of aroma: same as first time. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy. The flavour has still plenty of roasted malts and lactose sweetness, also notes of chocolate, mild coffee and some liquorice. Good stuff - I’m upping it a few points. Original rating: Sampled bottle, RBNAG 2007 in Grimstad. Dark brown to black colour. Nice roasty aroma, notes of cocoa, hints of liquorice. Moderately sweet flavour, plenty of maltiness (probably also lactose).

First rating Medium yellowish brown head. Dark brown barely translucent body. Powdery cocoa aroma with chocolatey malty notes. Dryish mild cocoa taste with some residual sweetness. Faint licorice notes. Nice session beer. (0.355l bottle at RBNAG’07.) 7,4,6,3,12=3.2

Second rating: Small brown head. Nearly opaque body goes deep dark red at edges. Earthy roasty chocolatey aroma with fruity notes. Sweet roasty milk chocolatey taste with mineraly notes. Mid-to-full body. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel. Sweetish mealy fruity chocolatey aftertaste with perfumy roasty notes. Nice, drinkable, but could perhaps have a little more character. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Strømmen.) 6,4,6,4,13=3.3

12oz. bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark brown with thin tan head that dissipates very quickly. The aroma is of milk, butter and some malts. Flavor is very sweet upon first hitting your mouth with hints of butter-toffee and finishes with a slight bitterness. Creamy overtones are present throughout. Has a smooth, lacey mouthfeel. Very good and very drinkable.

On tap : Very dark pour with a huge brown head and awesome lacing. A milky nose on this one. I wasnt impressed much by the flavor, mainly cause i didnt find much there. Also the body was a little thin for a stout. Its ok, just not wonderful.

10/20/07 On draught at Uber, Seatle. Aroma is very sweet creamy roast malt, just about perfect. Appearance is dark brown/black with a medium off-white head. Flavor is sweet roast malt forward, very well blended and slightly sour, but not objectionable. Mouthfeel is medium/high bodied with a low carb feel. Overall, very good and very easy drinking, I like this style, but often find it tough to plow through more than one; good job left hand for getting me to ask for another.

Bottle. Dark/black. Good head that disappears after a while. Fresh smell. Light-bodied with sweet taste of coffee and chocolate. I would have liked a tad more bitterness.
