Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Coffee/grape aroma. The alcohol is present in the flavor, which is coffee and dark chocolate. Creaminess becomes apparent as the beer warms.

Draught in Pothuiske in Mestreech. Very dark, almost black color with thin cappuccino brown head. Roasty nose. Aroma is roasty malts with caramel which dominates the flavour, too. Pleasant roasty bitter aftertaste. The latte of beers ! :)

This sweet stout pours black with a light tan head that gives wofts of chocolate... yeah mainly chocolate aroma. The head dissapates faster than you can say "milk stout"! Leaves ok lacing. Feels kinda light.. no it’s just real sweet. I like it. The malts shine here....can’t indicate any hops but I know they are in there. Knock knock...who’s there? Need more hops that’s who! Pretty decent cream (sweet stout) though.

Thick, black, with a thin espresso tinged head which quickly clears to make way for dark chocolate, espresso, raisins and cream. A quaff of super smooth sweet cream hints and overflowing dark chocolate, not too bitter, with some smoked wood. Espresso bitterness hits in the back of my tongue after the fact, preventing the Milk Stout from being overly cloying and sweet. Surprisingly not a heavy or thick body, but very clean and almost light for a milk stout. it’s interesting to note that the milk is not upfront and personal, but hanging around in the back, watching over all the other flavor profiles which make up her circle of friends. More chocolate presence about halfway through, though more milk chocolate then dark, sweeter and less bitter. I get a bit more smokiness in the breath of the beer, as milky cream, chocolate, and coffee round out the palate all the way to the last quaff with a lightly dry flourish.
A very well balanced representation of the style. I usually can’t do more than one stout at a time, but I could enjoy a couple of these and be just fine.

Bottle. Black with a small head. Aromas are chocolate and coffee with low bitterness. Milky sweetness is pronounced and welcome. Flavours are sweet and obviously milky which is a change from the lactose stouts I’ve had previously. Rich smooth chocolate with light roast malts. Quite simply a really pleasant drink.

nice sweet aroma - this brew tasted smooth and creamy - not too bitter - nice aftertaste - I think I could have used a bit more flavor but not sure what... might be a bit smooth for my palatte. Would enjoy this beer again.

One of Left Hand’s better brews. It pours dark black with minimal head. Has aromas of roasted coffee and malts. The sugars from the milk come out nicely and it has a smooth mouth feel to it. Pretty good beer
