This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Poured black with a thick tan head from a nitro bottle. Aroma is roasted malts and coffee. Taste is like a latte, coffee and cream with some sweet caramel malts. It has a very full creamy body with very low carbonation (or nitrogenation?), I think it could have used a little more. Overall this is the definitive example of a milk stout to me.

Pours dark with a slightly brown head. Smells of chocolate and coffee but you REALLY have to look for it. Taste? This is where it wins big time! It tastes like a fine frap or even an iced milk. Feels a tad watery in the mouth but if drank fast it has a very smooth creamy go down. Overall? I was honestly surprised when I tasted this because it’s right there in the mix of cheap beers where I’m at and this outclasses ALL of them.

Bottle, as Milk Stout Nitro, courtesy of SinH4, many thanks! Poured hard. Looks like a Guinness while the head is turning into its final form: Stable and dense, fine bubbles. Tastes like one of these iced coffee frappées or an iced coffee milk drink. And I mean that in a good way, as the coffee, milk and cream flavours are authentic, the sweetness matches their intensity. Slightly watery but still creamy later on. Very, very well done!

Nitro bottle. Beautiful dark opaque black/brown with thin tightly bubbled cappuchino head. Aroma is lightly roasted coffee, some cream. Super smooth mouthfeel with medium finish, a little coffee bitterness at end. Tastes of milk chocolate bar and vanilla ice cream. The flavor profile is balanced but pretty subdued. Nice for the nitro at home.
