This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2013 Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout Nitro Serving: from bottle--purchased at Full Throttle Bottles. Aroma: chocolate, raspberry and coffee. Appearance: average-sized, rocky, light brown, initial head with mostly diminishing longevity and an excellent sheet of lacing. Black body. Taste: moderately sweet, chocolate/coffee initial taste and roasted, mocha-like finish with a lightly bitter aftertaste and average duration. Palate: medium-to-full bodied with creamy texture and soft carbonation. (So this is how a five on a scale of one-to-five should be!) Overall: excellent. Very smooth with great aroma and flavor to match. Great palate too. Update: the second bottle was just as enjoyable as the first. Update: the third bottle was just as great as the first two.

Coffee notes, not too sweet, had the nitro version, although I’m not sure what the point is.

Had in NYC local hostel. Poured dark, no head. Was OK, not amazing. Maybe better with hearty dinner.

355 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malt (dark coffee) and a light sourish note. Medium to full body with a creamy and flowery mouthfeel and a strong to heavy sweetness and low carbonation. Flavor full of roasted malts - brown suggar and dark coffee; maybe some wood and spices. Excellent.

355ml bottle nitro. A fun beer, but a bit sweet for my taste. I’m new to sweet stout anyways, but definitely a quality product.

355ml. Pours a very dark brown with a tan head that is dense and has a head that retains at about 1/2 a cm. Aroma is dark stone fruit, vanilla wafer, caramel, cocoa nibs and coffee. Palate is medium full body and medium carbonation with a smooth, rich creaminess. Flavour is rich dark fruity cocoa upfront with a coffee flavour that precedes a bittersweet, creamy fruitiness which then smoothly recedes into vanilla, which lingers. Outstanding balance and medley of flavours. Superb.

Tasting notes for the Nitro Milk Stout: Difficult to know if the non-Nitro Milk Stout (tried alongside) if really a different beer, but there appeared to be a few nuances between then. Like the non-Nitro Milk Stout, the nose has a nicely light and beefy smokiness, like a barbecued beef steak - but this time with a bit of ground filter coffee. Mouth has a bit more mocha (to my mind), then there is a drier and less creamy/sweet end compared to the non-Nitro Milk Stout.
