This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Appearance: Very dark, nearly black. Love the cascading bubbles as the pint comes off the tap. Builds a majestically creamy white head at the top that sticks around forever. Some lacing, though nothing intense. Looks outstanding. Smell: Some faint roastiness, some bitter smokiness, and some chocolate notes. Smells like a stout, not much more to say here. Taste: Great balance between the roasty malt bitterness and a touch of chocolaty sweetness. This milk stout is not too sweet, probably because it does not have the addition of actual chocolate or other brewing adjuncts. This one has a right amount of sweetness to compliment, but not overpower, the roastiness, and makes this one drink somewhat like dessert coffee or dark chocolate mousse. Finishes sweet. Mouthfeel: Creamy due to the nitro bubbles. Felt smooth as silk on the palate. Overall: Exquisite smoothness from the nitro makes this balanced milk stout fantastically easy and pleasurable drinking. Would certainly buy again, especially when looking for a nice, easy-drinking stout. This beer is fantastic on-tap, and is a vast improvement over an already good bottled product. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass from One Stop Market, Haverhill, MA. Aroma is lactose, mild milk chocolate, coffee. Appearance is dark, opaque brown with trace head, no lacing. Taste is lightly sweet with some chocolate and coffee, light anise in finish. Palate is light bodied with thin texture and mild carbonation. Overall, a good beer but not a standout in a tough category.

Bottle@home, from Wine Spot, Cleveland, USA. Medium aroma with chocolate, slightly roasted malts and some licorice. Pitch black color with strong, creamy, light beige head. Medium, bit thin taste with licorice, roasted malts and some chocolate. Balanced with medium taste spectrum and medium aftertaste with slightly roasted malts. Strong/medium body with low carbonation. Overall, quite sturdy and especially balanced product for the percentage. Still, you cannot do miracles with 6%.

Poured into a taster showing black center with translucent coffee rims and sparse latte colored foam. The nose shows coffee and hints of soy sauce. The palate is nitrogenated and medium bodied. Very light flavors of coffee and subtle notes of soy sauce. Barely any bitterness.

Pour hard! Oh yes! I pour my glass in 10 seconds, and watch how a creamy, very dense and tan head gradually forms on top of the black body. The head is of course fully lasting. Beautiful! A dense pillowy head is nice to look at, but it doesn’t actually increase the intensity of the aroma... I manage to pick up some dark roasted malt, coffee and faint leather, though. Fairly strong flavour of dark roasted malt, coffee, ash and hints of generic fruits and dark berries. Moderate sweet taste with a light bitterness in the finish. Mid-bodied, creamy body and close to flat carbonation. A fun one.

Litt mild for meg. Men bevares, her var det sødme nok. Tror nok denne kunne ha hatt litt mer karbonering, og litt mer brentmalt. En god, men ikke mer enn god, milk stout.

Very sweet initial flavor, the lactose sugar does calm down quickly and leaves slightly bitter aftertaste. Which just makes you want to drink again. Had bottled from local liquor store as alternative to Guinness. Very much want to try the nitro version.
