This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800ís. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefitsÖsorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year Ďround stout.

Poured from the bottle - this is the Nitro version. Poured straight into the bottle, but it didnít provide a very thick head. What head there was a soft tan color and while not thick, leaves a lot of lacing. The presence of the milk sugar is clearly present, leaving a nice soft roundness on the tongue. Aromas are of sweet malt and a touch of coffee. Tastes are cream, coffee, malt. This is one of the best milk stouts Iíve had in a long time.

355ml bottle from Beers of Europe (£2.99):
American craft beers on the 1001 beers list are nothing if not consistent, this one is another highly drinkable beer with a very good balance to it. It wasnít quite as sweet as your normal milk stout and the alcohol content was a little higher than usual but so to was the standard, the beer was great drinking from the start and a beer well worth its place on the list.

Nitro version. Amazing pour. After settling, black with tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Same on the flavour. Like drinking a beer milkshake. Amazing.

I have evidentially been passing over this beer for a while, because I finally realized, while sitting at the Park Tavern in Rosemont, that I hadnít rated this beer. I canít believe it took me so long to try it. I see it everywhere. But I just pass it up, thinking Iíve had it. So finally, Iíve tasted it. The beer pours a pitch black color with a smooth, thick but soft and pillowy tan head. The body is completely smooth and dangerously drinkable. I tasted plenty of cream, chocolate and cocoa flavors. I also noted a faint nuttiness. This is an outstanding stout! Iím going to go buy a case of bottles soon. I hope the they are just as delicious as it is on draft / nitro.

I was really hoping for a good chocolate stout, but it tastes like more alcohol than I expected, at least compared to similar brews. Didn't like it as much as I'd hoped. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Coppers and Rehills, Newcastle. This very dark brown-black beer pours without any head. It has a sweet milk chocolate flavour, gentle coffee and roasted notes followed by more sweet chocolate and vanilla on the finish.

Btl pours an opaque dark brown almost black color. Head is dense and thick leaving spots of lace on glass. Smell of chocolate, molasses, toffee, alcohol and a hint of black coffee. Tastes of sweet toffee, chocolate, and coffee. Big body, perfect carbonation, smooth, soft mouthfeel and a bitter sweet finish. What a great stout! Easy to drink, full of flavor and extremely smooth mouthfeel. Awesome!
