Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Opaque black with thin tan head, nice cascade after pour. Sadly, this beer was kept at room temp by the seller and possibly suffered for it. Aroma a bit plain. Medium lace with stout nose and chocolate finish. Excellent malty body for a stout, one of the best milk stouts I’ve had in ages, second only to Mackeson’s milk stout as brewed in the Caribbean. Great to see a solid entry in this small category.

Black pour with minimal tan head. Has a really enjoyable smokey flavor but with a bandaid aftertaste that threw me off (something I would expect to find in a not so hot Scotch Ale but not in a milk stout). Felt like there could have been much more going on with this beer but it fell flat.

Seems like I got an old bottle, as it’s a bit off. Pours a deep brown with a violet hue in the light and a huge foamy light tan head. Aroma took the beating from the age, with a lot of metallic overtones hiding the roasty malts. Flavor seems unharmed though, with a good creamy texture carrying forward the sweet milk sugars, roasted malts, and a tiny bit of hops for balance. Very drinkable, with a great mouthfeel, low ABV, and balanced finish.

Bottle. Dark hazy brown color with a thin tan head. Sweet aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and some coffee. Creamy mouth feel, mild and easy to drink. Aftertaste reminded of hot chocolate but with roasted tones. A nice stout, although sweet.

Bottle. 12 oz. Split with Vinny. Pours sugary toffee hazy brown with a thin, yet rich tan head. Aroma of oats, cream, toffee, barley, roasted malts, and cinnamon. Medium, milkshake-like body with a creamy, thick body. NIce finish. Decent stout.

Smooth, dark, creamy, sweet and tasty with a nice burnt malt / coffee flavor to the finish as the most outstanding feature. Rather light int he mouth which is OK. Not as memorable as others but a fine brew.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark hazy brown color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, brown sugar with a creamy note and a very light roast. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, cream, leafy bitter hops in the finish. Medium bodied. Smooth and creamy. Good beer... one of my favorites from Left Hand.
