3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, USA - JAN 11, 2011
22 oz bottle at Derek’s Tasting. Pours a murky blackish brown hue, laces small with a small offwhite head. Aromas are fruity and sweet, touches of sweet toffee, cherries, plums, wet oak and vanilla tannins, light coffee. Initial is sweet caramel, toffee, touches of toast, brown sugar, wet oak, touch of spirit with dark fruit, cherries, cough syrup with a touch of medicinal. Finish is sweet, lightly bitter. A bit too thin and sweet for me, the dark fruit influence is a bit frustrating aand doesn’t quite get to bad, but still is a bit medicinal. Ok, not my type of beer though.

Vanilla and super malty...a bit like a latte. Very dark brown in color. Strong malt, woody and syrupy; chewy-chocolatey.

Rich, woody beer. The vanilla from the oak blends splendidly inot the malty base. Some cognac character as well. A fine example of barrel aging.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Svesse (4399) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - NOV 4, 2011
(Bottle, 2009 vintage) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby when seen through light. Frothy beige head. Malty, roasted, fruity nose with chocolate, dried fruit, roasted malt, raisins, toffee and chocolate fudge. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread, dried fruit, raisins, toffee, liquorice, caramel and a toasty cocoa bitterness in the finish. Some warming brandy coming through at the end. The wood character is quite gentle and comes through more like brandy (raisins, dried fruit) than oak. Full body, fairly sweet. Lovely beer.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Damico (1405) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 6, 2011
2007 Bottle - thanks Vince. This one smells like roasted malts with some delicious caramel dominance. The beer pours dark mahogany brown with a light caramel head on top and some sediment. It tastes like rich roasted malts with light sweet notes that settle on the palate. The body is very light, not much carbonation left from the 4 years of aging.
