COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Widdershins, our counterclockwise biennial barleywine aged in oak casks reveals fruity notes of orange and apricot upon a foundation of oak, garlanded with earthy hoppiness. Our answer to waning daylight and frigid temperatures can be enjoyed immediately or saved in your cellar for a snowy day. Cheers!

2007 big bottle all to myself in the hottub. Pours a nice near clear medium amber with decent fading tan head. Nose is fruity, like tangerines, vanilla, big malt sweetness. Flavor has a great smoke note that totally surprises along with green wood, honey, and some sweet booziness, but not hot. Wonderful cramy full body is very chewy. Leaves a resiney hop finish. Very pleasant.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light copper with fair, creamy, beige head / Sweet, syrupy nose of malt and citrus / Medium to full body, sweet and syrupy but with good hop balance, with some heat and a hint of bitterness on the finish / Flavors of burnt sugar, brown sugar, orange, apricot, grapefruit, toast, and oak / This is sweet and syrupy style if not my favorite, but it is a good example.

On tap at bevarage source, dark amber color with nice khaki head, aroma of dark fruits and toffee malts. Taste is nice sweet malts with figs and raisins, not gettin much oak in it but it is there with some vanilla undertones. Very creamy rich palate, a great one from left hand.

On tap at Pizza Paradiso in Dupont Circle. Served in a snifter. Pours a moderate copper color with a very thin off-white head and not much in the way of lacing. The nose carries oak, oak, and more oak. As it warms, I get a bit more oak. Other than that, a touch of semi-sweet malt. It’s not terrible, just horribly one-dimensional. Other than the oak, there was a touch of caramel and sweetness. I’d rather not have this again.

A Sim rate (EBF Night of the Barrels): Smells sweet with very obvious whisky. It’s bitter and overly sugary. OK, but not great.

Pours a clean copper amber with one finger of off white head. Rich and dextrinous nose with lots of caramel and some vanilla and wood. Tad fishy and metallic on the flavor. Rich and malt forward flavor, toffee and brown sugar. Meh, medium body and warming finish.

brinehart (89) - Colorado, USA - DEC 22, 2011
Pours a gorgeous red mahogany with tight beige head. Woody, vanilla nose along with the heavy malt. Incredibly well balanced and drinkable barley wine. Very nice English hop character lasts even through the wood. The only criticism is that the barrel is just a little to dominant, but overall, a very enjoyable beer.
