COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a GABF Pro-Am qualifying competition, the brewers at Left Hand will select a winning beer to be scaled up, brewed at Left Hand, and entered in the 2009 Great American Beer Festival. The Pro-Am competition represents a unique opportunity for commercial breweries to pair up with homebrewers and create some truly unique beers. The winning homebrewer will be invited to brew their scaled-up recipe with the pro brewers at Left Hand in the June timeframe. The GABF Pro-Am rules stipulate that homebrewers must be members of the American Homebrewing Association at the time of entry.

On tap at the brewery in August 2009. Pours a medium-dark brown with hints of cola coloring. The smell is of roasted brown malt with a little bit of caramel and hints of nuts. The taste is mostly malt with a few of the aforementioned characteristics thrown in. The body is medium with moderate carbonation, little alcohol presence, and good drinkability. Tasting at The Stable. Brown hue with lots of red. A small tan head. A pleasant and sweet aroma. Roasted notes, chocolate, brown sugar, nice fruit, and some spice. Dangerously easy to drink.

Pours a slightly hazy brown with a nice head.... Aroma of burnt/toasted malts, chocolate, and a touch of hops... Flavors follow suit... Medium bodied, medium mouthfeel... dry finish, hoppiness is quite mild...

’chocolate starfish’ on tap at papago 9/17/09. dark rich reddish brown pour with a cap of frothy clingy light beige. the nose is predominantly chocolate-y with notes of roasty grain, malt, caramel and toasted nuts. the flavor is quite rich but only in one dimension (NOT necessarily a bad thing!)... coffee, caramel malt, roasty, toasted nuts and a musty earthiness akin to a wet burlap sack with a dryness and mild bitterness on the finish from the hops. medium bodied leaning on full... soft and smooth. this is a nice simple beer... 7/4/7/4/15/3.7

On tap @ 1702 - This beer was listed as Left Hand Chocolate Starfish. Pours a clear reddish-brown color with a medium size off white head. Light lacing. Aroma is basically caramel malt. Flavor is light esters and caramel malt. Malt lingers on the palate. Medium body. A decent beer.

On tap at Lindbergh Taco Mac. Pours a deep, dark ruby-brown with some tan lace (almost no head - typical Taco Mac pour). The aroma is full of dark toast, molasses, and light caramel. The flavor is biscuity/toasty with lots of toffee and light roasted grain character like chocolate and/or coffee. It is caramel malty with nice depth, a mild bitter finish with English yeast character (light oxidation, too?). It has a nice "old ale" character (on the "stock ale" side of the style - not "old" side) from its maltiness, perfect level of roast and melanoidin, and the English character. The moufhfeel is brisk with a medium-full body and almost an astringent note in the back(?). Overall, a very nice brew - drinkable and tasty.

On tap at Papago in Phoenix. Apparently, this is being entered in the GABF ProAm. Pours plum in color with a frothy beige head that leaves plenty of lacing. Smells predominantly of malt. Tastes of further malt, cocoa, red grapes, cola, and caramel. Nice, especially for a brown, but a bit basic.
