Commercial Description:
Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo' Series. Our Rye Bock is a pleasant departure from traditional bocks and rye beers. The use of malted rye in beer finds its origins in Bavaria. We here at Left Hand use a bottom fermenting lager yeast, paired with a hop profile of classic German bocks. Our Rye Bock gets a wonderful tangy spiciness from the rye, accompanied by dried cherry aromas in the nose. It is a beer of great flavor with a long, savory finish. The image of a goat has traditionally been the symbol of bock beers. It was customary to feed goats rye to make them potent in the spring. We love the marriage of these two ideas. Will our Rye Bock exacerbate your spring fever? Maybe not, but trying out old folklores never tasted so good.

A Tasting at Three Cellars Milwaukee. Aroma of rye, toasted malts with a fruity yeasty finish. Pours cloudy dark brown with a medium head. Flavor matches the aroma. Smooth palate. This one I found to have a sweetness I have yet to find in a Rye.

Sample Hotshots Feb Indy tasting - Aroma is rye, toasted malts with a fruity yeasty finish. Pours cloudy dark brown with a medium head and great lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Smooth palate. I’m a big fan of rye beers and this doesn’t disappoint.

MMmmmmm bocky. Not much aroma, little alchol and some malts. Taste is nice and sweet with very mild rye. Most contirbuted to body. I love ryes and this one is descent but not much spice to it.

Good, rich, malty flavor. Nice spices from the rye. Good hit of hops in the finish that melds nicely with the rye spice.

Perhaps this just isn’t my style but this beer didn’t do much for me. Nice looking pour but the up front carbonation and rye spiciness seemed to somewhat numb my tastebuds. After that the malt character came through somewhat but the styles lack of hopping left me empty. Perhaps I should have let it warm up somewhat. Very difficult cork to remove.

Bottle from Topps in Tempe, 9/07. The pour was full brown color, full off-white head, very carbonated for the style, bottle opening required a quick pour. The aroma was chocolate, light roast, bread, grass. The flavor followed suit, some extra yeast detectable, dry finish, rye bite comes through in the finish. Overall a pretty nice brew, but it’s still a bock when all is said and done (nice, not excellent).

750ml bottle-pours a big retaining foamy light tan head with hazy mahogany color. Aroma is dark/medium malt-molasses/chocolate, dark fruit-raisins/prunes, roasty, nutty, some spice hops. Taste is much different than aroma. Rye-medium malt-some sweetness, nutty, some spicy hops. Medium body. Dry finish.

Wow, tore my hand up just getting the dan cork out of the bottle. Huge carbonation. At least a 1 inch thick head in my chalice. Settles very slowly to a very dense and creamy layer. Dry malty aroma. Some light rye and some chocolated covered almonds. Color is a dark chocolaty brown. Malty flavor with some more rye notes and chocolate. Like some yummy chocolate chip cookie dough. Finishes malty and chocolaty. I keep coming back to the chocolate which I think is very distinctive in this brew. A pretty darn good brew.
