4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 lemasney (398) - Trenton, New Jersey, USA - DEC 23, 2008
Style and Glass: Dunkler Bock, Mug; Snifter
ABV, Volume & Calories: 7.7% in 25.36 fl oz. estimated at 400 C
Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $2.79 (down from $14 ea — I picked up 6 for $15 — madmen there, and they better stay nutso)
Aroma: very nice, inviting, flowery, rye, bready, wheaty, grassy, meadow, rain.
Visuals: interesting label, like an aged iced tea, deep murky brown, cloudy, thick off white head, sticky lace.
Taste: very well balanced, brown ale, sage, onions, rye, roses, tea, chai, some hops, medium strength.
Palate: very nice, smooth oily texture, medium, light, tasty finish.
Overall: A summery brew, refreshing, very enjoyable. A repeat, 6x at least. Maybe my favorite bock so far. Amazing value — makes me wonder why the run on the price. well crafted.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 MaxPower (961) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - MAY 1, 2004
Pours murky brown with a huge light brown head of small bubbles, fruity, yeasty aromas. Smokey chocolate-caramel, sugar plum and rye bread flavors. Medium to full bodied and very carbonated, crisp mouthfeel reminds me of a weizenbock. This is one hell of a beer, the best this brewery has to offer IMO.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 jstraw (1217) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 1, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 24, 2008 Cloudy amber with big, floatsam head / Nose of malt, dried cherries, and spice / Medium, dry, creamy hop body with good finish / Lush, earthy flavors of rye, mushrooms, molasses, and malt, and a spicy rye finish / Very good but questionably expensive.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Slick (1971) - Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA - JUN 29, 2004
Nice dark brown color, large tan head that lasted for a long time only to fade slowly to a nice lace.Malty fruity aroma with maybe a bit of hops in it.Nice fruity flavor of plum and maybe some citrus but hard to say.Over ripe apple and a nice amount of hops that don’t get in your face but just give a nice hint and make you want more of this brew. The finish is fruity and effervescent, with a nice malt fruit after taste.Truly wonderful stuff much better then i was expecting and i wish i had much more for this winter. Thanks go to Jpdipso for sending this fine nectar my way.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 3, 2004
Hazy brown with beautiful streaks of brilliant ruby. Fluffy, fizzy, ample pecan-colored head. The big, malty aroma is warm and inviting. Chocolate, caramel, light smoke, mixed nuts, toffee, toasted bread and sweet, ripe cherry, raisin and fig. Soft, supple texture and a creamy and smooth body make this enjoyable physically. The flavors continue to show the big malts in this beauty. Not much in the way of bitterness (hops or otherwise) to distract one from the sweet maltiness. And I was not disappointed at all. It was just an enjoyable, malty doppelbock made with Rye to help smooth the body and add an additional element of creaminess to the body. Another great celebratory beer from the folks at Left Hand / Tabernash / Indian Peaks.

750, corked & caged: explosive cork removal . . . humongous light brown head that has both large bubbles and a creamy top – constantly growing and seemingly never dying. Tingly, rye-ainse aroma, with a spicy roasted quality and some grainy pears. Strong, fruity flavours, heavily laced with alcohol. Light, pepper on a well carbonated palate that is lively while still smooth. Other flavours: dark toasty malts, musty anise, dark cherries, plums and bitter figs. The body turns outrageously muddy with the addition of the dregs – pretty interesting for a Doppelbock, wonderful beer!
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Braudog (4607) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - APR 15, 2008
Caged/corked. Pours with a ruggedly reddish brown color and just a fizzle of head. The aroma is mildly medicinal, but quite restrained. Interesting drink here ... a broad blend of stuff going on here, from a easy going roast, a teaser of dark fruit, and a kiss of chocolate in the finish. Very tasty brew and exceptionally well assembled at 7.7%! (#3422, 4/15/2008)
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Bigsilky (325) - Charleston, USA - JUN 8, 2006
Hazy pur into my dimpled mug. Chocolate mahoganey that swarms with dissolved yeast culutre. Creamy wihte head shows the virtures of bottle-conditioning. Spicy on the nose, not all hops, some malt fruit and biscuity aromas. Toasted Rye bread perhaps?
Initially, it’s a little sweet on the opening sip. This quickly turns into a melange of grain bitterness and hop freshness. Even though this beer is bigger than the 7% it seems to creep up very fast, maybe it’s the rate mof consumption that aides this. Cool beer, even in the warm weather this will be a favorite.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JPDIPSO (4957) - Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 18, 2004
Fun pour. Hugh head of beige bubbles. Chunks of lace. Murky amber brown liquid. Smooth and silky feel. Aroma is rather light, but full of complexity. Caramel, sweet dough, almonds, light alspice and cloves, sorghum and a real lager cleanless. Crisp yet sweet, chewy yet clean. The slickness of the rye really comes out as it warms. Malt nirvana. Rich and toasty malt with most of the componants mentioned in the aroma. As good as everything is to this point the real pleaseure for me comes with the finish. A long and lasting malt and rye finish. Some fruitiness comes out and plays as it warms. An outstanding effort.

Well, this will be my second evaluation, the first time I sampled, the “TheLongBeachBum” and I were trying to see how many big bad boys we could down in the short span of 8 hours, after much consultation LBB and I figured 15 was the total, so as far as this beer goes all I put down was the name, and “Good”!
The beer vacates the bottle and takes up residence in the glass a cloudless deep mahogany color with the head super-sized and light tan in color, the texture spumy, with the residual lace a thick blanket to cover the glass. The nose has a touch of sour mash aroma hints of caramel, and a touch of yeast, quite crisp and pleasing to the senses, start is sweet, nice malt and rye profile, the top is middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is stinging in its acidity, the hops kind-hearted in their spiciness, quite dry aftertaste that lingers on and on, and as I sample this time, I see even “Three Sheets To The Wind”, I know “Good” beer when I taste it.
