Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Bottle. So very, very mediocre. Well balanced to the point of oblivion and that’s where it fails. This beer left absolutely no impression on me whatsoever.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2008 The aroma is caramel like with nuts and toffee. The appearance is amber with a decent head. The flavor is like the aroma and quite bitter. The palate is OK but overall it’s a good beer.

Copper-coloured and a begie head. Body is hazy. The head is first big and creamy but soon falls down. Aroma has nuts, dark fruits and toffee. Also some strawberrys. Flavor brings nuts, burnt malt. Also little grassy and sweet.

(Bottle) Pours dark amber. Nice hop aroma with soft tones of flowers up front but also notes of apricot, tea and mild grapefruit. The malt tones are also quite soft with hints of caramel and maybe some roasted notes. Undertones of wood, unripe pineapple and other more subtle fruits. Soft hoppy flavour with tones of flowers and mild grapefruit. Toffee like malt in the background. Soft mouthfeel, maybe just a tiny bit to clean and watery. Light to medium bitter. Light sweet. Light acid. Light to medium body.

Bottle: Pours a lightly cloudy amber and results in a lightly flowery nose with a nice dense head. Sticky ring lacing. Lily pad effect of carbonation. Unfortunatly this is where all the fun ended for me. Thinner body surrounded by hops hops and some alkaline stuff. If it gets better when warmer , maybe I should have put it in a microwave or let it sit in the sun. Pass.

On tap at the Microfestivus ’07... Deep dark amber pour with a diminishing, minimal head that leaves spotty lace. Some caramel and an almost baby powder/airy nose. Caramel malts open up as the brew warms, backed with a biscuity mid-palate and a touch of copper. A nicely dry bitter finish adds a burnt biscuit touch. Although the flavors are well-balanced and decently integrated, the palate is a bit out-of-balance. The body is a bit thin and the mouthfeel a little watery. This seems to start down the right path, but lacks some substance to see it to fruition.

bottle Dark amber colour. Big, frothy head, nice lacing. Biscuit aroma with lots of resinous Cascade hops. Flavour is resinous Cascade hops with notes of salty liquorice.
