Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Clear coppery color, with small, but suitable off-white head. Aroma is clean, but fruity, with hints and dribbles of citrus, grapefruit, fresh and zesty. Taste is zippy, with delicious spritzes of hops that maintain a presence throughout the finish and all through the contents of the bottle. Great balance, smooth, but full of flavor. Normally I turn my nose at ESBs, but this one has style, body, and taste that many lack.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2004 Pours a nice clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma is malty with a hint of apple and bread. Taste is of caramel, toasty malts, grapefruit and english hops. Moderately sweet, kind of bitter. Medium mouthfeel, gets progressively watery. Could use a little more malt body and sweetness IMO. Good lacing and head retention. Decent.

Bottled on August 5, 04. Oh dear, there’s not much here. Light amber-yellow color, very thin palate, and what is there to remark about in flavors?

Pours amber with a fluffy white head. Earthy hop flavor in this smooth and creamy beer. Good hop aftertaste. Somewhat simple, but very drinkable.

Deep amber with a white head. It left in a hurry but left some super sticky lace. Malty aroma with a bit of hops and some dough. Flavor is good. Hard to define. Malt, and caramel up front, just the right amount of bitters, maybe a little grapefruit, but subtle. Good density. Slightly bitter finish. Good session brew.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2008 [12 oz. bottle] Deep copper color with a sticky looking white head. Very sweet and malty nose with hints of dough, toffee, citrus and biscuits. Initial taste is very malty with hints of toffee, biscuit and some hops and a slight sweet taste at the end. Slightly bitter aftertaste. A little thin in the body.

Clear copper with a dense mostly lasting off-white head. Excellent glass lacing. Fairly malty nose, but there are some lurking hops in there. Quite malty up front, buscuits and cookie dough, medium hoppiness, medium-light bitterness. I am not getting the powerful grapefruit that I see mentioned in other ratngs. Body is medium-light with a bit of astringency in the finish. Not bad but pretty run of the mill.
