Commercial Description:
Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Very mild aroma, nice red/brown color. Strong hoppiness but not too bitter, and a nutty sweetness as well.

Dark amber colored, medium sized light brown head. Chocolate, toffee, caramel, strong bitter hops in aroma, slight lemon also there. Medium bodied. Flavor is sweeter with caramel and also good hops, flowers and some sourness too. Aftertaste is hopped, still slightly watery flavored. Biting carbonation.

Pours a clear copper color. Aroma is a bit sweet-molasses, caramel. Taste is nice mix of bitterness and sweetness. Very nicely balanced.

Sampled on cask in May of 2006: Pours a slightly hazy copper mahogany with a thin, nicely-lacing white head. Aroma has good authentic toasty caramel maltiness and nice bitter hoppy balance. Body starts with a sweeter toasty, almost biscuity malty presence and good English hoppy flavor. Very drinkable and fairly authentic.

22oz bomber. burnt orange colour when held to the light. strong aroma - somewhere between butterscotch, sweet caramel, and molasses with a paralleled scent of brown sugar and maple syrup - i want to pour this aroma on my pancakes. the one thing about bitters is that they never are bitter. in fact, this is quite the opposite, revealing its brown sugar taste the moment it hit my lips. the hops here are magnificent, as they enhance the beer without dominating the sugary malts. its commercial description is one of the few that are actually accurate. the finish here is smooth, and not domineering, and leaves a mellow aftertaste for the palate to enjoy. drinkability: 8 of 10.

Pored a hazy orange color with a good lasting head. Not as hoppy as I would have like. It was very thin in the mouth. Decent beer.

I am not all that well-grounded in judging ESB’s versus style, ut this is certainly a good bit lighter than a Fuller’s ESB I had some time ago. The light hoppiness of this brew made me think more of an English-style IPA than an ESB. It is a light and pleasing beer, but rather unmemorable. It poured a very attractive and slightly hazy red-orange color with good head formation and retention. Odor was rather fruity...a sort of non-specific hop smell. Taste was that of caramel malt with some fruit augmentation. It seemed well balanced with some isoamly acetate (banana) flavor in the finish. All-in-all, a pretty good tasting beer. Mouthfeel was very light, but unremarkable.
